Top 10 electric cars with the greatest range 2022
Range
The range of an electric car requires several ingredients. The most important thing is a modern battery pack with sufficient capacity. An aerodynamic design ensures that a car is hindered as little as possible by air resistance. It also helps when the powertrain efficiently converts power into motion. Eco tires reduce rolling resistance and weight savings make an (electric) car energy efficient. Last but not least, a calm driving style will get you the farthest.
What is WLTP?
Since 2018, the range of electric cars has been measured using the new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) method. That replaced the old, outdated NEDC consumption test from 1992. The new WLTP test is much more realistic and practice-oriented. This will give consumers a more honest picture of the performance of various car models. Experience shows that the promised consumption figures are theoretically achievable, but in practice can deviate significantly. Okay, so much for the advance information. Now for the top 10 electric cars with the greatest range:
10. Volkswagen ID.3 – 553 kilometers (WLTP)
The very first Volkswagen under the all-electric sub-brand ID ushers in a new era. That’s why it was named ID.3: according to Volkswagen, this model – after the Beetle and then the Golf – will become the brand’s third legendary success story. In terms of popularity, the ID.3 has not had anything to complain about so far. The German hatchback is available with different battery packs. The largest battery pack is only empty after 553 kilometers.
9. BMW i4 – 590 kilometers (WLTP)
BMW showed sketches of the concept car BMW i Vision Dynamics back in 2017. It’s no surprise that the 2021 i4 – BMW’s first all-electric sedan – is very similar. Modern battery technology gives this i4 a respectable driving range. Would there ever be a “full-blooded” electric BMW M4 as well?
8. Tesla Model S – 600 kilometers (WLTP)
You would almost forget that the Tesla Model S has been on the European market since 2013. Thanks to interim updates, the car is still completely up to date. The Model S jumps efficiently with its energy, there are a variety of versions to choose from (with power outputs up to over 1,000 hp), and thanks to Tesla’s extensive charging infrastructure, you never have to drive far to the next charging station.
7. Tesla Model 3 – 600 kilometers (WLTP)
At the height of the electric car tax credit, the Tesla Model 3 was a roaring success. The American manufacturer’s new factories could barely handle the huge demand. Besides comical easter eggs in the infotainment system (such as fart sounds and karaoke), this compact Tesla surprises with surprising performance and a usable range of over 600 kilometers (WLTP).
6. Ford Mach-E RWD extra range – 610 kilometers (WLTP)
Is it homage or sacrilege? However you look at it, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E promises to provide a Mustang-worthy driving experience. Driving pleasure seems guaranteed with versions up to 487 hp and 0-100 km/h in less than four seconds. With 610 kilometers of driving range, it also gets you pretty far.
5. Lightyear One – 625 kilometers (WLTP)
Product of Dutch soil: Lightyear from Eindhoven started as a student team that won the World Solar Challenge with futuristic solar cars. The Lightyear One is the brand’s first full-size electric passenger car. Unlike other EVs, this Lightyear is not solely dependent on charging stations; via solar cells in the body, the car generates power. Pricey, but for that you get a range of 625 kilometers (WLTP).
4. BMW iX – 630 kilometers (WLTP)
The iX is BMW’s technological flagship among electric models. Despite its substantial size, much attention has been paid to aerodynamics, weight reduction and powertrain efficiency. Hence the impressive range of 630 kilometers (WLTP). And thanks to fast charging (up to 200 kW), you can recharge more than 100 kilometers of range within ten minutes.
3. Mercedes EQE – 659 kilometers (WLTP)
In 2022, the production version of the Mercedes-Benz EQE appeared on the market. Indeed: the all-electric alternative to the E-Class. Available with several powertrains, including the “entry-level” EQS 350 with an output of 215 kW (292 hp). There is even an electric AMG top version: the AMG EQE 45 4Matic+ delivers a peak power of 505 kW (697 hp).
2. Mercedes EQS – 772 kilometers (WLTP)
The EQS has been on the market since 2021. Indeed: the all-electric alternative to the S-Class. This is the first Mercedes to be built on a completely new platform developed specifically for the electric EQ model series. A car packed with the latest technologies in safety and infotainment. The heaviest battery pack gives an impressive driving range of 772 kilometers (WLTP).
1. Lucid Air – 900+ kilometers
American Lucid Motors wants to surpass the established order in terms of luxury, performance and range. The Lucid Air is also coming to the Netherlands; the first orders are already in. Such a Lucid Air costs a bit: about 220,000 euros. For that, though, you get at least 933 horsepower and a driving range of 837 kilometers (EPA). There is no WLTP measurement yet for the Lucid Air, but by and large it is more favorable than U.S. EPA measurement. The WLTP range averages 1.12 times that according to the EPA test.
