What happened at Monza last year?
Last year, the race weekend was enhanced by a sprint race on the Saturday. The result of the sprint race determines the starting position for the full race on Sunday. It was Valtteri Bottas who managed to grab pole in qualifying for the sprint race starting grid. Hamilton and Verstappen closed out the top three, followed by a fine performance from McLaren with Norris and Ricciardo in places four and five. Something we will undoubtedly see again this year is the heavy traffic on the track during the qualifying sessions. The circuit has long straights where everyone tries to grab a skidstrip for a fast time.
Sprint race Monza 2021
Hamilton and Verstappen are keen to earn extra points during the sprint race. Especially as the two go neck and neck in the championship. It was therefore no bad thing for Verstappen that Hamilton got off his mark worthlessly at the start of the sprint race. The Briton lost expensive spots and finished in a disappointing fifth place after 18 laps. His teammate Bottas won the race, followed by Verstappen and Ricciardo. For Bottas, the performance did not matter, as he had to start at the back anyway due to the grid penalty for changing the engine.
Race
The start at the Monza circuit is always chaotic. The entire field has to scramble to get safely through the first chicane. Fortunately, that’s what happened. However, Verstappen, who started from P1 due to Bottas’ engine change, had a particularly poor start that allowed Ricciardo to surprisingly take over first place. Hamilton smelled blood and then stepped up the pressure on the Limburger. This resulted in some pushing and pulling, causing the Brit to land off the track. Fortunately for him, they were able to continue on their way without any problems and once again open the attack on the Dutchman.
Crash Hamilton and Verstappen
Halfway through the race, it was time for the pit stops. Verstappen was the first of the frontrunners to dive in for a new set of rubber. A front wheel caused Max to lose valuable time. The mediocre stop cost him dearly. Because a lap later Hamilton comes in, makes a good stop and comes back on the track right in front of Verstappen. In the chicane after the long stretch and the exit of the pit lane, both men go side by side through the tight curve combination, resulting in a touche. Max lands with his car on top of Hamilton’s. With a DNF behind their name, the drivers leave their car. Ricciardo eventually manages to take the win. His teammate Norris finished second and Bottas, who left from the back, ended up on the podium after all.
