This is what we already know about the new Honda Prelude (2026)
Market launch in spring 2026
The new Honda Prelude will be presented to the world as early as 2025. Nevertheless, in Europe we will have to wait a little longer for the model’s arrival. Its market introduction is scheduled for spring 2026, several Honda dealers can confirm to us.
Dual MacPherson front suspension
Based on a modified Civic platform, the next-generation Honda Prelude will use the Civic Type R’s double MacPherson front suspension, using additional, highly rigid components to separate the steering shaft from the damper shaft, not only increasing the vehicle’s track width but also minimizing “torque steering.
GT driving mode
In addition, the Prelude also gets the hot hatch’s adaptive dampers and a GT driving mode is available in addition to the Comfort, Sport and Individual options. Honda is clearly betting on a car that is GT than a pure sports car. Compared to the Civic Type R, the Prelude gets a slightly softer, more forgiving suspension. Several prototypes have already been caught. Those rode on Continental PremiumContact 6 tires.
Sporty center console
The center console of the Prelude is completely different from the Civic, with a button-shaped gearshift in the center, along with controls for electronic parking brake (with auto hold function), drive mode switch and S+ Shift mode. Otherwise, we see many similarities to the interior of a Honda Civic, including the “mesh” style grilles.
Honda S+ Shift Technology
The sixth-generation Prelude gets so-called Honda S+ Shift technology that simulates a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Hans de Jaeger, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe, said, “The Honda Prelude is an iconic name and this latest model promises to build on that heritage with our signature hybrid performance and the latest dynamic technology. All to deliver not only exceptional efficiency, but also the driving enjoyment this model is known for. We are excited about coming to Europe after a very positive reception so far.”
About the Honda Prelude
The Honda Prelude was a sporty coupe produced from 1978 to 2001 and marketed in five generations. Below is an overview for each generation:
First generation (1978-1982)
The first Prelude was launched in 1978 as a compact coupe based on the Honda Accord. The design was angular, and the car had a large sliding glass roof, a notable feature at the time. Motoring consisted of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder (68 hp). The focus was on lightweight construction and a comfortable driving experience.
Second generation (1982-1987)
The second-generation Prelude introduced a more aerodynamic design with smoother lines and a lower profile. A new feature were the pop-up headlights. Honda improved performance with a 1.8-liter engine (100 hp) and later a 2.0-liter engine (110 hp). This model was known for its balanced handling thanks to its double wishbone suspension.
Third generation (1987-1991)
The third generation was appreciated for its futuristic styling and advanced technology. This was the first Prelude with all-wheel steering (4WS), a first in the automotive world. Engines ranged from a 2.0-liter carbureted engine (109 hp) to a 2.0-liter DOHC engine (137 hp). The model was praised for its sporty handling and innovative engineering.
Fourth generation (1991-1996)
This generation marked a move to a rounder, smoother design. The pop-up headlights were replaced by fixed units. Engines included a 2.2-liter VTEC engine that produced up to 185 horsepower, making the Prelude a serious sports coupe. The 4WS remained an option, and the interior offered more luxury and comfort than before.
Fifth generation (1996-2001)
The last generation returned to a more angular design with a more aggressive look. Engines were more powerful, with a 2.2-liter VTEC engine (200 hp in the Type SH version). The model offered more refined driving performance and remained popular among car enthusiasts, but market share declined with the rise of other sports coupes and compact SUVs. Production ended in 2001.
