This is the new Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe
Two engine variants
The new Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is the fifth in-house developed model after the SLS, the first generation of the two-door GT, the GT 4-Door Coupe and the SL. At launch, the new AMG GT is available with two power levels of the 4.0-liter AMG V8 biturbo engine. In the top GT 63 4Matic+ model, the engine delivers an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Nm over a wide rev range of 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes only 3.2 seconds and the top speed is 315 km/h.
The base model is the GT 55 4Matic+. In this version, the V8 engine produces an output of 350 kW (476 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes 3.9 seconds and the top speed is 295 km/h. Shifting in both cases is done with an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission with a wet start clutch instead of a torque converter. This clutch reduces weight and, thanks to its lower inertia, optimizes response to throttle movements, especially during acceleration and load changes.
Technical Modifications Mercedes-AMG GT
Especially for the Mercedes-AMG GT, the engine was fitted with a new crankcase, a relocated intercooler and active crankcase ventilation. The intake and exhaust ports have been optimized for more effective gas exchange, and the exhaust gas routing for the catalytic converter housing and fuel particle filter has been increased. Engineers achieved the AMG GT 63 4Matic+’s higher power primarily through higher turbo pressure, increased airflow and modified engine software. Through all these measures, the eight-cylinder impresses with its extraordinary power delivery with powerful boost at all engine speeds, combined with the highest possible efficiency for low consumption and emission values.
AMG Performance 4Matic+
The two V8 models come standard with the fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC+. The system combines the advantages of different drive concepts. The system has fully variable torque distribution on the front and rear axles. The car has all-wheel drive with a 50:50 power distribution between the front and rear axles but rear-wheel drive only is also possible. The new AMG GT has an electronically controlled limited slip differential on the rear axle as standard, which provides excellent traction and maximum driving safety under all driving conditions. To reduce unsprung weight, all wishbones, knuckles and suspension elements on the front and rear axles of the new AMG GT are made of forged aluminum.
Active rear axle steering
The new Mercedes-AMG GT also comes standard with active rear axle steering (HAL). Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction (at speeds up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (at speeds above 100 km/h) as the front wheels. The high-performance AMG composite brake system guarantees excellent deceleration values, the manufacturer promises.
Riding modes
There is a choice of six AMG Dynamic Select driving programs, namely Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and RACE. AMG Track Pace is standard on board. The software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and records more than eighty vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration, steering angle, brake pedal operation) ten times per second while driving along a defined route. In the “Telemetry” screen, forty parameters can be displayed live, up to four at a time.
In addition, lap and sector times are displayed on the multimedia display, head-up display and in the combo instrument, as well as additional training and analysis tools. Navigation in the head-up display shows cornering angles and braking points so drivers can find the best line. MBUX’s augmented reality feature also allows the line of a saved recording to be shown on the multimedia display. In this way, the driver can improve his driving style, as with a virtual instructor. Acceleration and deceleration values can also be measured and stored.
Compact and powerful
With its long wheelbase, short overhangs and steeply raked windshield, the new Mercedes-AMG GT looks compact and powerful. The expressively designed rear shoulder area gives the model even more sports car appeal. The active rear spoiler is seamlessly integrated into the large tailgate. The deep and wide AMG-specific grille provides a strong presence. The lower air intake makes the front look even wider. The sporty front is rounded out by the powerful powerdomes on the hood.
The interior of the new AMG GT features 2+2 seats (rear seats suitable for people up to 1.5 meters), a rear seat backrest that folds down in parts, an 11.9-inch large multimedia touchscreen and an MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system. Once again, the workmanship has been taken to the next level. Ambient lighting has also been considered. Also worth mentioning are the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with integrated headrests. Even sportier are the optional AMG Performance seats, also equipped with integrated headrests and air vents in the backrests. The side cheeks of the optional multicontour seats are automatically adjusted narrower in the Sport, Sport+ and RACE driving programs to always provide optimal lateral support.
