The new Honda Civic Type R will be available to customers in Europe beginning in early 2023. Outside Europe, the first examples are already driving around. “With the all-new Civic Type R, Honda engineers have once again succeeded in delivering the most rewarding driving experience in the performance hatchback segment,” said Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe.
For 25 years of Civic Type R
“Through exceptional improvements and the application of technologies derived from motorsports, we have surpassed the capabilities of even the stripped-down, lightweight version of the previous model. It is this commitment to performance excellence that has made the Civic Type R so popular with motoring enthusiasts for 25 years.”

Sporty looks
To enhance the sportier look of this hot hatchback and improve driving performance, the Type R is noticeably lower and wider. The shape is enhanced by the wheel arches that extend above the matte black 19-inch alloy wheels, fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The front bumper’s large lower grille maximizes airflow to the engine and works in harmony with the new, subtle hood that now features a vent to re-optimize airflow around the front end.

Paint finishes include the historic Championship White, very popular with Honda Type R enthusiasts, in addition to Rallye Red, Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Grey Pearls.
Turbo engine
The Civic Type R is known for its powerful, highly responsive and high-revving engines. The proven engine of the 17YM Type R has now been developed even further. The revised turbocharger now has a compact housing to improve overall efficiency. The blade count and shape of the turbine are optimized to boost power and improve airflow through the turbocharger. This has resulted in the Type R’s most powerful VTEC turbocharged engine, counting on more than 320 horsepower.
Revised exhaust system
This combined with a revised high-efficiency exhaust system provides improvements in the previous generation Type R’s power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed, making the 2023 Civic Type R one of the cars with the most power per liter in its class.
Six-speed manual transmission
Honda is installing an optimized version of the six-speed manual transmission that fans of the previous generation raved about. A revised rev-match system with “auto blip” provides a perfectly tuned rev-match when downshifting through the gears. This also helps keep the Civic Type R balanced when entering a corner. The gearbox incorporates a sturdy lever with an optimized shift pattern.
Brembo brake system
The upgraded Brembo brake system of the Honda Civic Type R incorporates the same two-piece brake discs of the previous generation. The new car has improved temperature control and air cooling via an upgraded radiator. This ensures sustained, optimal performance under heavy use. A new triple exhaust design with enhanced sound modulation improves aural sensation.
