Review – Mercedes-AMG GT (2024), that it can still be done!

April 3, 2024

Second-generation Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe

The second-generation Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is Mercedes-AMG’s new flagship model. Moreover, it is the fifth model developed by AMG. The SLS, two-door GT, GT 4-Door Coupe and the new SL preceded the AMG GT. Speaking of that SL, you could almost say that this AMG GT makes the SL obsolete. But that SL involves a convertible. The AMG GT is a coupe. In terms of price, the models are in similar territory, but in the AMG GT, the emphasis is overtly on more sportiness.

Mega panamericana grille

One can argue about design, and so can the looks of this Mercedes-AMG GT. At least it is a car that stands out. Wide hips, a mega panamericana grille, a long hood, hefty wheels, extremely wide rubber, your heart makes a jump when you see this appear in your rearview mirror. Let alone if you get to drive it. That, too, is a celebration. Do you know the expression: it fits like a glove? That’s the feeling this second-generation AMG GT gives when you get in. All buttons are at your fingertips. You can tell from everything that this car is made to entertain and serve the driver on all fronts.

Comfortable comfort cruiser or hardcore supercar

Take the steering wheel, where switches allow you to change the character of this AMG GT from a comfortable comfort cruiser, to a more hardcore supercar, with a flick of the wrist. Could the sound be a little less? No problem! Just close the valves in the exhaust. On the contrary, do you want to enjoy extra bubbling, barking and rattling? Then you set up the exhaust system nicely. Prefer not to do that with a cold start in the morning, as we have our doubts whether the neighborhood will appreciate it. No doubt they will appreciate the looks.

Additional versions Mercedes-AMG GT

The new AMG GT comes in several flavors. For example, as the AMG GT 55 4Matic+ Coupe with an output of 350 kW (476 hp). In addition, there is an AMG GT 43. That has a 2.0-liter AMG turbo engine with an output of 310 kW (422 hp) and maximum torque of 500 Nm. All engine variants have a 10 kW (14 hp) strong belt-driven starter generator (RSG) that can provide a temporary boost. The AMG GT 43 accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The top speed is 280 km/h.

4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine

Mercedes-Benz Netherlands gives us the keys to the 1,970-kilogram Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4Matic+, the provisional top model in the lineup. The ingredients were put together by a celebrity chef. Up front, Mercedes-AMG spoons a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with 585 hp (430 kW) and 800 Nm of system torque. That torque is available far a wide rpm range between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. Shifting is done with an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G automatic transmission that shifts smoothly or, with some tweaks, just with firm clicks. The 0-100 time takes 3.2 seconds and the top speed is 315 km/h.

Dark brown rumble

Impressive numbers, aren’t they? Still, it is mainly the engine sound that gives you tummy jitters. Dark brown rumble, ferocious, pure and with a solid bite during shifts and throttle elevators. It is a stand-alone attraction that you actually want to pay more than 300,000 euros for. Although we can name another reason in a moment: fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4Matic+. That system also makes it easy to tweak the car’s character.

Electromechanically controlled clutch

Thanks to fully variable torque distribution on the front and rear axles, the system combines the advantages of different drive concepts. An electromechanically controlled clutch variably connects the continuously driven rear axle to the front axle. The new coupe can thus switch steplessly between traction-oriented all-wheel drive with a 50:50 power distribution between the front and rear axles to exclusively rear-wheel drive. Drift mode? You name it!

Mercedes-AMG GT also practical? Yes, of course!

The new Mercedes-AMG GT is 4.73 meters long and its wheelbase is 2.7 meters. The width of the car comes out to 2.10 meters and the height is 1.35 meters. The car has a 2+2 seating arrangement. Sitting in the back, as an adult, you’d rather not. Rather, consider the back seat as extra luggage space. Speaking of luggage space, it is remarkably spacious. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 321 liters, which is more than enough for several weekend bags. You can run errands with no problem, although you have to be careful with the long nose. At thresholds, preferably use the elevator system where the nose rises briefly. 70 liters fit in the fuel tank. This greater capacity is also much needed, as average consumption on paper is 14 liters per 100 kilometers. If you take it easy, at a speed of about 105 mph, it achieves consumption of 1 in 10.

Starting price Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4Matic+

The starting price of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4Matic+ comes in at 298,901 euros, of which 100,397 euros is VPT. That’s no joke. You seriously pay 100,000 in carbon tax. Absurd? Oh well, by now we are used to cars like the AMG GT being available only to the happy few. Those who shop and live in Germany, for example, are considerably cheaper.

Options AMG GT

Options abound, of course. You can think of an AMG aerodynamics package, AMG night package, trim parts in AMG carbon and 21-inch cross-spoke forged AMG rims. All those packages and options drive up the price. This particular test specimen, for example, costs 330,000 euros. To keep the low nose nice, we would definitely opt for the elevator system on the front axle. That does cost 2,178 euros. But the car is worth it. A very pricey option is the High Performance ceramic composite AMG braking system. You pay 9,075 euros for that. For AMG Performance sport seats, you will spend 5,142 euros. To complement the V8 soundtrack, you can also opt for a Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound system. An option of 4,489 euros.

In love

The buyer will not care. Who wants to enjoy. Every ride. Every day. Rest assured: in the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4Matic+, this is perfectly possible. It is a car you will fall in love with just because of that magisterial V8 engine resting under the hood. Well, rest … roars!
