Mercedes-AMG starts production of street-legal Formula 1 car
Formula 1 car for public roads
The Mercedes-AMG One is often described as a Formula One car for public roads. Indeed, the powertrain is being built by the same motorsport experts who are also responsible for developing and producing the engines for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 race cars.
1,063 hp
The Formula One-based hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter V6 turbo engine and four electric motors. Together, the five engines are good for 1,063 hp. As a result, the One shoots to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. 0-200 km/h takes just 7 seconds and from 0 to 300 km/h goes in 15.6 seconds. The top speed is 352 km/h. The street-legal F1 car weighs 1,695 kilograms and can travel 18 kilometers all-electric. The V6 doesn’t shoot into the red until above 11,000 rpm.
Special factory
A total of only 275 will be built. The Mercedes-AMG One will not be assembled in Germany, but in Britain. In Coventry to be exact. AMG even set up a plant there specifically for the production of the One. All copies of the One are carefully built by hand. According to Mercedes-AMG, the construction of the exclusive car is reminiscent of the production of a luxury watch. Like the production of an expensive Rolex, some components of the hypercar are first pre-assembled and tested for function. Then they are disassembled again and only then finally mounted in the vehicle.
Affalterbach
In total, more than fifty specialists work on each individual Mercedes-AMG One. At the end of the production process, a factory test driver inspects each Mercedes-AMG One again at a nearby test track. Once approved, the vehicle will be transported in a closed truck to the Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach. There, both the technical explanation by the Mercedes-AMG One experts and the handover of the vehicle will take place.
