Hydrogen-powered motorhome: solution for long trips?
Okay, the camper is far from roadworthy. This is a fledgling study, with First Hydrogen based on its concept of a hydrogen-powered van. The idea behind the hydrogen-powered motorhome is of interest to vacationers who like to take distant trips with minimal environmental impact. You can do the same with an electric-powered RV but then the lower driving range is a limitation.
Cooperation with motorhome builder
The illustration is a sketch drawing of the intended camper. First Hydrogen created it with partner EDAG Group. This company specializes in designing and building RVs based on light commercial vehicles.
Driving range of approximately 500 km
The range of First Hydrogen’s hydrogen-powered van is about 500 km. Of course, this is already interesting if you want to be on the road every day with your RV to a different destination. Soon, if there are enough hydrogen refueling stations on the road, you will fill up the tank in about 5 minutes. It also saves you the hassle of charging at a campsite.
Energy source on the pitch
Hydrogen can also be used as a source of energy at the campsite. After all, you are not dependent on an electricity connection. The fuel cell in the car makes power from the hydrogen for the electric drive, but it can also continue to produce electricity even when stationary. So then the fuel cell acts as an aggregate.
Cooking and hot water
Power can be used for cooking and for hot water from an electric water heater. There are other legions of ways to utilize hydrogen and fuel cells in camping.
