Polestar 3: electric performance SUV

The Polestar 3 is an electric performance SUV. During the design process, much attention was paid to aerodynamics. It shows, as the 3 looks particularly streamlined. Some examples are the aerodynamic wings integrated into the front and rear spoiler, and the aero blades at the rear. In that regard, Polestar’s 3 follows the same course as the Lotus Eletre, also an electric SUV from the house of Geely, of which Lotus and Polestar are a part.

Completely new platform

The Polestar 3 is the first car based on an entirely new electric car platform developed by and shared with Volvo Cars. Production start for the first launch markets is scheduled from mid-2023, at the Volvo Cars facility in Chengdu, China. First deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter of 2023. North America, Europe and China will get the Polestar 3 first. Asia-Pacific and the Middle East will follow during 2024, although that timing is not yet final.

Polestar 3, also built in Ridgeville

Production at Volvo Cars’ plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, USA, is expected to begin in mid-2024. Those produced at this plant are expected to be destined for North America and other markets. The first deliveries of cars from this plant are expected in mid-2024.

The big boss speaking

“The Polestar 3 is a powerful electric SUV that appeals to the senses with distinct, Scandinavian design and excellent driving dynamics,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. “And with the introduction of this new model, we are also expanding our production network in the United States. We are proud and excited to expand our lineup as we continue our rapid growth.”

Two electric motors and AWD

At market launch, the Polestar 3 is equipped with two electric motors and thus AWD, but the emphasis is on the rear wheels. Standard equipment includes adjustable one-pedal drive and an electric Torque Vectoring Dual Clutch function on the rear axle. A decoupling function is also available for the rear electric motor, where the car is powered only by the front electric motor to save energy under certain conditions. Dual-chamber air suspension is also standard. This allows the Polestar 3 to electronically adjust its active damper speed within two milliseconds (500 Hz).

Two engine variants: Long range Dual motor and Long range Dual motor Performance Pack

The standard version (Long range Dual engine) delivers a total of 360 kW (489 hp) and 840 Nm of torque. With the optional Performance Pack, the total power increases to 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm. The optional Performance Pack (6,600 euros) not only increases maximum power but also sharpens driving dynamics. Other features of this package include performance-optimized air suspension, 22-inch forged alloy wheels and distinctive “Swedish gold” trim details.

Lithium-ion battery

Thanks to a 111 kWh battery pack, the Polestar 3 has a range of 610 km according to the WLTP test method. This figure is not yet final. Official certification data for energy consumption and range are pending and will be released in 2023.

At home in all markets

The lithium-ion battery has a prismatic cell design, a protective aluminum case with boron steel reinforcement and liquid cooling. A heat pump is included as standard, allowing the Polestar 3 to use ambient heat for climate and battery preparation. The Polestar 3 can also charge bidirectionally, making it suitable for vehicle-to-grid charging and plug-and-charge. So of all trades, this Polestar 3.

Charging Polestar 3: the numbers

The 111 kWh lithium-ion battery has an on-board 400V grid and consists of 17 modules. Fast charging is possible with 250 kW (DC). Charging the battery from 10 to 80 percent then takes only 30 minutes. Charging with 11 kW (AC) is also possible. Charging from 0 to 100 percent then takes as much as 11 hours. Of course, it is and remains a large battery. A charging cable is included with purchase. This is a 3-phase AC charging cable of 16 A for use with a home charger or charging station.

Also considering sustainability

Sustainability is a top priority at Polestar. As such, the brand has made every effort to reduce the ecological impact of the model. The materials used in the Polestar 3 were selected for their durability credentials. The materials palette includes bio-MicroTech, leather certified for animal welfare and fully traceable wool upholstery.

NVIDIA DRIVE-core computer

The Polestar 3 is the first model from Polestar to be equipped with an NVIDIA DRIVE core computer, running software from Volvo Cars. This automotive platform from NVIDIA acts as an AI brain, processing data from multiple sensors and cameras of the car to enable advanced safety features and driver assistance.

Various radars and cameras

The Polestar 3 comes standard with a total of five radar modules, five external cameras and 12 external ultrasonic sensors to support all safety features. The SmartZone under the front wing is a new feature of Polestar design and includes several forward-facing sensors, a heated radar module and a camera.

Inside, two closed-loop cameras monitor the driver with eye-tracking technology from Smarte Eye. The cameras monitor the driver’s eyes and can activate warning messages, sounds and even an emergency stop function when distraction or drowsiness is detected. An overview of all driving assistance systems is listed at the bottom of this article under all the Polestar 3’s technical features.

Greetings from Google

The Polestar 3’s in-car operating system is based on the Android Automotive OS developed in collaboration with Google. Among other things, the system can be operated through the central 14.5-inch display. Over-the-air updates (OTA) allow for ongoing software improvements and activation of new features without having to visit a service point.

Standard equipment Polestar 3

All Polestar 3 versions come standard with air suspension, a full-length panoramic glass roof, LED interior and exterior lighting, retractable door handles with approach detection and 21-inch alloy wheels. In the first model year, the Plus Pack and Pilot Pack are also standard. These packages include many premium features such as a Bowers & Wilkons audio system with 25 speakers, 3D surround sound and Dolby Atmos, soft-close doors, a head-up display and Pilot Assist.

Optional Pilot Pack

From the second quarter of 2023, an optional Pilot Pack with LiDAR from Luminar will be available. The package includes an additional control unit from NVIDIA, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors and a cleaning system for the front and rear view cameras. The system provides accurate real-time data about the car’s surroundings, especially when driving longer distances. This enables improved 3D scanning of the car’s environment in detail and prepares the car for autonomous driving.

Warranty, maintenance and roadside assistance Polestar 3

The Polestar 3 comes with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty. You also have an 8-year battery warranty or up to 160,000 kilometers. If the battery capacity (SoH) drops to less than 70% of the original capacity within 8 years of purchase, Polestar will replace the battery free of charge. The maintenance plan has also been considered. In the first 2 years or 30,000 kilometers, the electric SUV usually does not need service. Built-in diagnostic software alerts the driver when additional service is needed, and regular over-the-air updates keep the Polestar 3’s operating system, apps and car systems as current as when they were first released.

Every new Polestar 3 comes with 3 years of free roadside assistance, available 24/7. If Polestar technicians cannot repair the car on site, the Polestar 3 will be towed to the nearest service location free of charge. If a repair takes longer than expected, Polestar will arrange overnight or alternative transportation.
