Electric car subsidy: all schemes in a row
Electric vehicle subsidy for private individuals
Lease drivers with a company car (who do not buy the car themselves but do drive it) have benefited for many years from financial benefits ( low addition ) when switching to an environmentally friendly car. But for a long time this was not the case for private individuals who purchase a car themselves with their own money.
Fortunately, that has changed. Private individuals who want to purchase a new or used electric car can now apply for a subsidy from the government (RVO.nl). This concerns the so-called Subsidy Scheme Electric Passenger Cars Private Individuals (SEPP) valid until December 31, 2024.
In 2022 private individuals can claim:
– € 3,350 subsidy for a new electric car
– €2,000 subsidy for a used electric car
The subsidy does not only apply to purchases, but also to private leases. In the latter case, the subsidy is converted into a contribution of €83 per month for a period of 48 months.
Conditions for an electric car subsidy for private individuals
Different conditions apply with regard to the SEPP. First, the car must meet certain conditions:
– Minimum range of 120 km
– The (original) new price, as registered in the vehicle registration register of the RDW, must be between € 12,000 and € 45,000
– The car must be purchased from a recognized car dealer
– It must be an original electric car and which has not been retrofitted to an electric car
Secondly, for each calendar year (until the end of the subsidy scheme at the end of 2024) a certain budget is reserved by the government. If the subsidy pot is already empty halfway through the year, you can no longer receive a subsidy in that year. Up = gone.
– A subsidy of €71 million is available for 2022 for new electric passenger cars, of which €8.82 million was left at the end of April 2022.
– A €20.4 million subsidy is available for 2022 for used electric passenger cars, of which €6.19 million was left at the end of April 2022.
When to apply for an electric car subsidy?
The subsidy for electric passenger cars for private individuals can only be applied for after the purchase or lease agreement has been concluded. The purchase or lease agreement for the car must also be concluded in the calendar year in which you apply for the subsidy. Applications for subsidy go through the RVO .
Please note: the subsidy will only be paid out when the car has been delivered, has been registered in the name of the subsidy recipient and a confirmation has been received from the RVO. No advance is paid. You may also only use the subsidy scheme once.
The subsidy is therefore not a discount on the car, but an extra that you receive afterwards. The subsidy amount is always paid to the private individual, never to a (car) company. It is possible to authorize a car company to make the subsidy application for you. This is possible with the form authorization of intermediary subsidies .
Subsidy electric car private individuals 2023 and 2024
The subsidy for new and used electric passenger cars for private individuals will be phased out after 2022. This subsidy scheme will end in 2025.
– The subsidy for a new electric car will fall to € 2,950 in 2023
– The €2,000 subsidy for a used electric car will remain unchanged in 2023
– The subsidy for a new electric car will fall to € 2,550 in 2024
– The €2,000 subsidy for a used electric car will remain unchanged in 2024
No subsidy for hybrid and plug-in hybrid
The subsidy for private individuals only applies to zero-emission vehicles. In addition to battery-electric cars, this also applies in principle to hydrogen cars, but due to the expensive technology, they cannot be found under € 45,000. The SEPP does not apply to hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids in any case.
Subsidy for electric commercial vehicle
In addition to the subsidy for private individuals, there is also a subsidy for entrepreneurs who want to purchase an electric company car. This concerns the so-called Subsidy for Emission-free Commercial Vehicles (SEBA) for the purchase or financial lease of an electric commercial vehicle or a hydrogen commercial vehicle. The application goes through the RVO. In the case of an operational lease, the lease company must submit the application.
For commercial vehicles intended for the transport of goods and a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg (category N1), a subsidy of 10% of the net list price applies. For commercial vehicles intended for freight transport with a maximum permitted weight of 4,250 kg (category N2), a subsidy of 10% of the sales price excluding VAT applies. Please note: in both cases a subsidy of a maximum of € 5,000 will be paid out.
Subsidy for electric trucks
As of 9 May 2022, entrepreneurs can also apply for a subsidy for an electric truck or a hydrogen truck.
The amount of the subsidy depends on the type of truck and the size of the company. Large companies can be reimbursed up to 40% of the additional costs compared to a diesel truck in total (subsidy and tax advantage). For small companies with fewer than ten employees, this rises to 60%.
This concerns the additional costs when purchasing, since electric trucks are still considerably more expensive than diesel trucks. The subsidy scheme will run until early 2027. In any case, more than € 40 million in subsidy has been reserved for the period up to the end of 2024. The available subsidy budget for the period after 2024 will be announced at a later date.
