Coastrunner EV: electric beach car from the Netherlands
Origin Coastrunner EV
Emile Pop and Justin de Boer, the two men behind Savage Rivale, came up with the idea for the Coastrunner in the summer of 2017. In a Corsica beach parking lot, they saw a niche that was still missing from today’s market: a modern interpretation of the beach car à la Citroën Méhari, but electric and safer for today’s busier roads. Now, four years on, the first Coastrunner EVs are almost ready for delivery.
Volkswagen ingredients
A close look at the Coastrunner EV immediately reveals some elements from the Volkswagen Group’s shelves. For example, the side mirrors, seats and steering wheel are taken from the Volkswagen Up. Furthermore, the design is completely unique. In terms of lines, it does look a bit like the Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS, the super sports car the company unveiled in 2009. The Coastrunner EV’s fabric roof and teak “rear deck” are fun-filled references to Savage Rivale’s maritime activities.
Furthermore, the beach car stands out mainly because of what it does not have. You still get a windshield, but other than that, the electric beach baby carriage has no windows or doors. The roof is fabric and can be rolled up for an open driving experience if desired. No doubt that makes it very nice for during the summer days at the coast, but also saves quite a bit of weight. Thus, according to Germany’s Auto, Motor und Sport , it weighs only 800 kilograms. Especially for an electric car, that’s not much at all.
Specifications Coastrunner EV
Because of that low weight, it doesn’t take much to get the Coastrunner EV going. The electric motor sits on the rear axle and produces 68 hp and 200 Nm of torque. With that you can reach a top speed of up to 120 km/h, which seems hard enough to us considering the type of car. The battery pack has a capacity of 20 kWh, good for a range of 200 kilometers. That’s quite a few rides along the coastline.
Refrigerator
If you can also make do with a little less range, it’s good to know that the frunk can hold a 60-liter refrigerator to keep your drinks cool. Also notable: on the dashboard are a pair of large speakers and one large subwoofer for the necessary tropical beats. Don’t be afraid of sand and water because the floor is made of teak and the upholstery is water-resistant.
Price Coastrunner EV
The price of the Coastrunner EV is not known, but you can reserve it at Savage Rivale. In a recent Facebook post from early this month, the company says there are 14 spots left to be given away and production is about to begin. Perhaps the first ones will be ready just in time for next summer!
