The Caddy has been part of Volkswagen’s model range since 1979, but has undergone a number of transformations over the years. The model started life as nothing more or less than the pickup version of the Golf. The car was first marketed in the US, where the car was offered as a Rabbit Pickup. For example, with the fairly popular Rabbit (the American Golf) it was also possible to respond to the large pick-up market in America. This first generation Caddy managed to last up to and including 1996.

From pick-up to delivery van
The second generation appeared in 1995. This time, the Caddy was fully focused on the European market and, moreover, no longer a pick-up. The Caddy was now the van variant of the Polo. Actually, the Caddy was a rebadge variant of the SEAT Inca, the delivery version of the Ibiza. Hence the front half of the Caddy corresponded to the Ibiza instead of the regular Polo hatchback. Behind the front doors, the Caddy was fitted with a considerably higher body, as was common in small delivery vans at the time. To follow up on the pick-up version, the Skoda Felicia Utility was also supplied as a Volkswagen Caddy in some countries.
family car
For the third generation from 2003, the Caddy once again takes on a different guise. It’s still a van, but now the front flows smoothly with the larger rear. The Caddy is now a ludospace, a fairly new segment that was invented in the 1990s with the Citroën Berlingo. Another feature of the ludospace is that, in addition to the delivery version, there was also a passenger version aimed at families. The Caddy was now also available as an MPV. With thorough facelifts in 2010 and 2015, this generation remained in the showrooms until 2020. Then a new generation appeared, but the personal version is not yet coming to the Netherlands.
