Volkswagen Amarok

In 2010, Volkswagen decided to enter the mid-sized pick-up segment, such as the Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux. In the Netherlands, this vehicle category plays a minor role, but worldwide pick-ups are one of the most popular types of commercial vehicles. The name Amarok primarily means ‘wolf’ in Inuit languages, but it would also mean a love of stones in Romance languages.

Especially for the Netherlands

Like most competitors, the Amarok is available with two- or four-wheel drive and with different cab variants. Perhaps striking is that Volkswagen developed an extra model especially for the Dutch market, with a slightly longer wheelbase. That extra length benefits the length of the loading platform, so that the Amarok, in combination with the five seats, is not subject to bpm on gray registration.

To America?

The Amarok is delivered almost worldwide, but not in ‘pick-up country’ America. Because of the so-called Chicken Tax, an extra tax on foreign company cars, the Amarok would become too expensive there. Moving production to the US to avoid the tax is not an option at the moment. Volkswagen has reserved the name Amarok in America, because you never know what the future will bring.
