Because of this app, drivers drive 15% safer

December 5, 2024

Safe driving as a game

Sometimes you don’t even notice it: you’re in a hurry, the music is nice and loud or you’re just not feeling so comfortable. Before you know it, you’re driving too fast or taking unnecessary risks. If someone were sitting next to you, you’d probably get a subtle (or not so subtle) comment. But most of the time we’re alone in the car. What if there was an app that kindly reminded you every now and then to slow down?

Safe driving challenge

Kia Netherlands and Interpolis came up with just that. During the “safer driving challenge,” participants used Interpolis’ AutoModus app. This app monitored your driving behavior and gave immediate feedback. Hit the gas too hard? Braking suddenly? The app gave you a friendly reminder – not in an annoying, pedantic tone, but rather in a way that motivates you to drive more smoothly and safely. In addition, participants received emails from Kia with personalized tips and insights into their driving behavior. The results of this approach do not lie. Participants in the “safer driving challenge” significantly improved their driving behavior: on average, they drove almost 16% safer than other drivers.

Kia Insights:

Kia uses data from their vehicles not only to promote safer driving, but also for other smart applications. Take Kia Insights, a platform that analyzes data from cars and translates it into useful insights. Think driving behavior, charging times and other patterns. For you as a driver, for example, this means tips on how to drive more economically, while businesses can see how to use their fleets more efficiently.

Smarter charging

A good example is the “Smarter Charging” campaign, a collaboration between Kia and the Ministry of Infrastructure. This examined charging behavior of participating Kia drivers, with striking results: 33% of drivers shifted their charging time to later in the evening thanks to insights from Kia Insights. This not only relieved the electricity grid, but also resulted in lower energy costs for Kia drivers.
