Alpine A290: an electric hot hatchback based on the Renault 5

June 13, 2024

Dream Garage by Alpine

The Alpine A290 kicks off Alpine’s 100% electric Dream Garage. The GT C-Crossover and the new A110 will follow later in this series. The A290 is an entirely French product. Production takes place at the Douai plant, part of ElectriCity. The electric motor comes from the Megafactory in Cléon. Starting in the summer of 2025, the battery will also be produced in France.

Four body colors

The catalog includes four body colors, including the new Alpine Vision Blue, a signature color that has been given special depth to provide greater contrast between light and dark areas. At launch, a limited Premiere Edition of 1,955 will be offered in 4 versions: Première Edition in Deep Black, Beta in Nival White, La Bleue in Alpine Vision Blue and La Grise in Tornado Matte Grey.

Wheels and brakes

19-inch alloy wheels are standard. The design of the Iconic wheels refers to the wheels of the Alpine A310. The Snowflake wheels refer to the Alpine brand name and come in three shades of black. The Brembo front calipers, with four pistons and the Alpine logo, are identical to those of the A110. Front and rear calipers come in Racing Red and Alpine Blue.

Interior Alpine A290

The A290 is a compact, sporty five-passenger car. The cockpit is finished in Deep Blue color. The dashboard is driver-oriented and the three-spoke sports steering wheel is covered in Nappa leather. Using the RCH (“Recharge”) dial on the left, the driver controls the degree of energy regeneration. To the right is the drive mode selector and, above it, the red OV (“Overtake”) button. From the steering wheel, the telephone, assistance systems and voice assistant can further be operated and the instrument display can be selected. The central 10.1-inch screen faces the driver. The high center console – also covered in Nappa leather – is inspired by the one in the A110. In the top-of-the-line GT Premium and GTS versions, the seats, dashboard and door panels are upholstered in durably processed European Nappa leather in Deep Blue and Eevee Grey.

AmpR Small-platform

Based on the AmpR Small platform, development of the A290 proceeded in historic Alpine style: equipping an existing platform with a more powerful engine, exclusively developed suspension, brakes, tires and torque management. The A290 is only 3.990 meters long, 1,820 mm wide and 1,520 mm high. The wheelbase is 2,530 mm and the turning radius only 10.20 meters. The luggage space is 326 liters.

Suspension

The multilink rear suspension with specifically developed stabilizer bars gives the A290 first-class handling. According to its makers, the car is very precise to position and very stable in fast turns. The suspension tuning evokes the sporty feel that is part of Alpine’s DNA. The combination of dynamics and stability produces handling that is both responsive and controllable.

Four driving modes

A button on the steering wheel activates the four driving modes: Save, Normal, Sport and Personal. In the latter, the driver can individually adjust the degree of power steering and throttle response, as well as the lighting atmosphere and Alpine Drive Sound. Electronic stability control can be completely disabled.

Two power variants

The Alpine A290 comes in two power variants: 132 kW (180 hp) for the base version and the GT Premium, and 162 kW (220 hp) for the GT Performance and GTS. The Alpine A290’s strong performance does not diminish as the battery runs out of power. The top version sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds.

In both engine versions, throttle response is calibrated to keep the A290 well in control despite its high power and torque. As a result, while the Alpine A290 is very sporty, it is also practical and efficient. Depending on the driving mode selected, the throttle response varies, but the car always responds progressively and predictably for increased driving pleasure and optimal performance.

The large torque of the electric motor (300 Nm) must be transmitted to the wheels in a controlled manner for optimal traction. For that purpose, Alpine has developed the Alpine Torque Precontrol. This precisely regulates the optimum amount of torque and, in combination with additional brake activation, ensures maximum traction.

Overtake function

The Overtake function for faster overtaking can be activated with the red OV button on the handlebar. When the boost is released, the instrument cluster displays an animation showing speed and remaining time. An animation also appears on the Alpine Telemetrics screen.

Battery Alpine A290

The Alpine A290 comes standard with a 52 kWh battery, good for a range of up to 380 kilometers (WLTP, pending homologation). A heat pump optimizes the interior temperature and at the same time the range. Thanks to the 100 kW DC fast charging system in the Alpine A290, its battery can be charged from 15 to 80% in 30 minutes, in 15 minutes the driving range can be extended by up to 150 kilometers (WLTP).

At an AC charging point, the built-in 11 kW charger charges the battery from 50 to 80 percent in 1 hour and 20 minutes. One hour of charging provides 70 kilometers of additional range (WLTP). Charging from 10 to 80% can be done in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Bidirectional on-board charger

The bi-directional on-board charger has V2L (vehicle-to-load) functions that allow power to be supplied to an electrical device, for example, via the charging socket. In addition, the A290 is V2G (vehicle-to-grid) compatible. This will allow electricity to be fed back into the grid in the near future.

Smart route planner

Google Maps navigation includes the electric vehicle route planner, which takes into account route, charging status, battery temperature, real-time consumption and automatic battery preconditioning to calculate the best route by optimizing charging.

GT, GT Premium, GT Performance and GTS

The Alpine A290 comes in four versions: the GT, the GT Premium, the GT Performance and the GTS.

A290 GT

The GT is powered by a 132 kW (180 hp) electric motor combined with – like all other versions – a 52 kWh battery and an 11 kW V2G onboard charger, a 100 kW DC charger and a heat pump. The GT sits on 19-inch Iconic alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires and features LED headlights, adaptive cruise control with stop-go function and a complete package of infotainment. The heated sports seats are upholstered in a mix of coated fabric. Alpine Portal integrates Google services and navigation with route planning for electric vehicles. Finally, front and rear parking assist systems and a rearview camera are standard.

A290 GT Premium

The A290 GT Premium offers comfort and refinement and features a black painted roof, power folding door mirrors, tinted rear windows and brake calipers in Alpine Blue color. The interior is upholstered in Nappa leather and features a Devialet premium audio system with Alpine Drive Sound, a heatable steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charger and an auto-dimming interior mirror.

A290 GT Performance

The A290 GT Performance is extra sporty and features the most powerful electric motor with 162 kW (220 hp), special Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires, red painted brake calipers and Alpine Telemetrics.

A290 GTS

The top version GTS combines the best of the GT Premium and Performance and adds black Snowflake wheels, among other things.
