Absurd number of Volkswagen Polos in the Netherlands

December 14, 2022

Volkswagen Polo extremely popular

On Jan. 1, 2022, Eindhoven had a total population of 238,307, but there are even more Volkswagen Polos in the Netherlands. Volkswagen’s B-segment hatchback, with 274,404 units, is in first place in the entire Dutch passenger car market. The Volkswagen Golf follows in second place with 271,007 units, making the Volkswagen Polo just slightly more popular.

Volkswagen Golf and Opel Corsa

The Opel Corsa is also a popular mode of transportation in the Netherlands. By 2022, our little country will have a total of 196,790 registered Corsas. Together, the Polo, Golf and Corsa account for 742,201 cars. In total, the Netherlands had as many as 9,142,277 passenger cars on Jan. 1, 2022.

Fight between Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris

The Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris are not much different from each other. The Ford Fiesta registered 174,877 units, followed by the Toyota Yaris with 174,461 units. The Renault Clio follows with 170,899 units. The Ford Focus (166,518), Toyota Aygo (160,855), Opel Astra (145,843) and Kia Picanto (133,240) complete the top 10 passenger car brands by 2022 model.

B-segment and C-segment, the segment of the Polo and Golf?

What stands out? The Dutch are big fans of compact hatchback models in the B-segment and C-segment, probably because larger models are particularly pricey in the Netherlands due to very strict BPM penalties. By the way, most of the passenger cars currently registered are of 2011 construction year.
