The new Swedish car brand Polestar has made a car with three engines, more than 600 hp and 1,000 Nm. Thanks to two motors, each driving a rear wheel, you can also go through a bend insanely fast. They have our attention, this is the Polestar 1!
They only make 1,500 pieces: the Polestar 1. This exclusive car is a real halo car, a car with which Polestar shows what they are capable of. But before we go any further, what is Polestar again?
Polestar is part of the Chinese Geely, which also owns Lotus and Volvo. And especially the latter brand has a clear connection with Polestar. The Polestar 1 is actually a coupé version of the Volvo S90.
You probably also know Polestal by now from the Polestar 2. This fully electric crossover will compete with the Tesla Model 3, among other things, and may become very popular in the Netherlands. However, the Polestar 1 is a completely different story.
The Polestar 1 is a plug-in hybrid, but not just any one. In the front is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a turbo and a supercharger. In the back are two electric motors, one for each wheel. But then we are not there yet. There is also an integrated generator in the front.
So a lot of engines, with a lot of horsepower. The petrol engine produces 309 hp and 435 Nm, the electric motors each deliver 115 hp and 240 Nm and the generator adds another 68 hp and 160 Nm. If we type that into the calculator, we arrive at 609 hp and 1,000 Nm.
Nice all those numbers, but the eye also wants something. Fortunately, the Polestar’s appearance is as impressive as its specifications. It is a very nice car to look at. This is partly due to the use of CFRP: Carbon fiber reinforced plastic. With this ultra strong and light material you can make much tighter corners and details, compared to, for example, aluminum.
A number of elements that are less unique, but certainly no less beautiful, are the front and rear lights. These appear to have been plucked from a Volvo, which in fact they are. On the front of the car, however, is a completely new logo: Polestar’s North Star.
Polestar 1 acceleration
Once behind the wheel, the Polestar 1 doesn’t disappoint. The sleek coupé accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h, but we get that from a book.
We immediately notice that it is a hybrid. When you step on the accelerator, you immediately get a kick in the back from the two electric motors. The readily available torque knows no mercy. We will make an appointment with the physiotherapist. A fraction of a second later, the 309 hp petrol engine takes it one step further.
Before we know it we are heading for a bend. The four-wheel drive Polestar 1 features giant Brembo brakes, so we’re not worried. But turns out, we don’t even need them. Thanks to Öhlins dampers, the car stays tight to the road surface when cornering and the car also automatically sends more power to the electric motor of the outer rear wheel, so that we never lose control.
Polestar 1 handling
So fast through a bend with a car that weighs so much, what a special experience! The Polestar 1 weighs in fact 2350 kg. This is partly due to the battery pack with a capacity of 34 kWh. The battery pack also provides a particularly large range for a plug-in hybrid. It can cover 125 kilometers without using a drop of petrol.
Comfort Polestar 1
Still, the 1 is not a hardcore sports car, but that was not the intention of Polestar. This stylish two-seater – only fits small children in the back – is very suitable for an adventurous road trip through Europe. The Öhlins dampers are manually adjustable, so you can determine the level of comfort yourself. Moreover, there are simply comfortable seats, so that you sit just as well during a long journey as in a Volvo.
The Polestar 1 is difficult to place. With a price tag of 158,300 euros, it is not a bargain. For that amount you can go shopping at Porsche for a 911 Carrera S, or a fully electric Taycan Turbo S. The Polestar 1 is a bit in between, but is a lot more exclusive with only 1,500 copies. So do you want to be sure that you buy a car that is not on the doorstep of the neighbor a week later? Then take a look at the Polestar 1…
