Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport, just the name. But with such a name you also expect something. What about the Italian temperament of this thoroughbred Italian sports limousine?
Interesting times at Maserati. The brand is working hard, is fully committed to electrification and comes with various new models. Because just listen. The Ghibli Hybrid kicks off a real electro offensive. Maserati, for example, comes with a battery-electric version of the MC20 and the new GranTurismo will have an electric powertrain.
In addition, Maserati will introduce the Grecale, a sporty SUV based on the platform of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. That Grecale comes with a hybrid powertrain, but also as a BEV. And the successors of the Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte will also receive a form of electrification. Is the pure fun over?
Maserati V6 biturbo engine
No, Maserati also thinks of the real enthusiasts who only want a petrol engine. The MC20 is not for nothing presented with a 630 hp strong V6 biturbo engine. In addition, with the famous trident, the brand has presented extremely potent Trofeo versions of the Ghibli and the Quattroporte, equipped with a 580 hp and 730 Nm strong 3.8-liter biturbo V8. Enough gasoline entertainment, with this Italian brand.
Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport
This Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport also falls under the latter category: an ‘old school’ Maserati with petrol power. We would be happy to tell you more about that drivetrain. First the name: Quattroporte. Sounds nice, and written in full – as is the case on the tailgate of this Maserati – it also looks nice.
The first Quattroporte – designed by Pietro Frua – dates back to 1963. In 1974 the second generation appeared. Actually, the name Quattroporte has never left Maserati. The model name is a permanent part of the line-up. And with good reason, because the model is still doing quite well in the segment of the sportier luxury limousines where you also find S-Classes with an AMG badge, A8s with S designation or 7 Series with M badges.
S en S Q4-versies
The S and S Q4 versions are right in the middle of the lineup. A lot of power and nice and smooth, that’s true, but not as powerful or fast as a Quattroporte GTS or Trofeo. What are we dealing with then?
V6 petrol engine Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport
In the front, Maserati spoons a 2,979 cc V6 petrol engine with two turbos. Good for 430 hp at 5,750 rpm and 580 Nm between 2,250 and 4,000 rpm. Shifting is done with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. A gem, because it puts butter softly or with appropriate persuasiveness in the Sport position into all gears.
Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport handling
You can let the box do the work or roll up your sleeves yourself. In the latter case you can get started with beautiful carbon fiber paddle shifters that are attached to the steering column. Every pinball action gives you a special feeling. It’s like with every shift you start a new chapter in the book ‘La Dolce Vita’ that you write in your mind when you drive this Maserati.
Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport sports mode
Yes, driving in this car is a special experience. Why? First of all there is that soundtrack that sounds from the four exhausts. Only at full throttle or in Sport position the Maserati roars a bit louder than normal. Not antisocially loud, by the way, but at a pleasant volume. In the interior, due to the necessary sound insulation, not much can be heard of this. Only when you hear the car from outside do you notice that the necessary dark brown musical notes come from the exhaust system.
Maserati Quattroporte interior
Second, there’s the interior you stay in. sensational. Leather, aluminum, chrome, carbon. Everywhere you look. That’s partly because this Maserati is quite richly decorated, about which more in a moment. In any case, you will stay in a very pleasant cabin with comfortable seats and an eye for the smallest details, such as a beautiful timepiece centrally on the dashboard.
Maserati sports performance
And is driving fantastico? Certainly in terms of driving comfort. This is truly a mile-eater in which you drive in one straight line to warmer places. This Maserati is also sporty, but do not expect super sports performance.
Weight Maserati Quattroporte
The 1,920 kilograms with which you are on the road can be felt well. In bends, but also during braking. In addition, the car has a fairly agile carriage. The emphasis is clearly on comfort, also in Sport mode. Not bad, what exactly do you buy a Quattroporte for. If you want more dynamics, just take a Ghibli.
Maserati Quattroporte Q4 all-wheel drive
Still, it’s great how this Maserati builds up pace in corners, without it becoming dangerous. It’s a bit cliché, but the car is literally on the road like a rock. You always have control and grip, especially with the Q4 all-wheel drive version. It is especially the longer journeys where you really start to appreciate this Maserati.
Maserati Quattroporte spacious
You arrive at your destination fully rested. And during the entire ride you can continuously enjoy all the materials that the brand has used in the interior. The car is spacious too. May also be with a length of 5,262 mm. The wheelbase is 3.17 meters. That means plenty of legroom, even in the back. Driving this Maserati is great, but so is sitting in the back. This is a Maserati that you also like to drive.
Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport top speed
This Maserati is not super fast, but pleasantly fast. It sprints to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 288 km/h. Great numbers. The fuel consumption is also good. At least, if you are a little calm with the accelerator. On average we came out at 1 out of 13. Given the potent power source and the higher weight, that’s really not a bad result.
Maserati body color Bianco Alpi
You can of course dress up a Maserati according to your own taste. Il cliente è il re, as they say in Italy. The costumer is king. This test sample was painted in Bianco Alpi body color, a pearly white shade. The interior is finished in Pieno Fiore leather in the colors black and red.
Nerissimo Carbon Pack
The starting price of the Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport starts in the Netherlands at 191,010 euros. But below the line, the price of the example driven by us is 224,895 euros. For example, the Pieno Fiore leather costs 4,961 euros extra and the Nerissimo Carbon Pack costs you 5,687 euros. The white mother-of-pearl paint will cost you 3,207 euros extra and for the Driver Assistance Package Plus you invest another 4,477 euros extra. Then it gets tough.
Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport options
In our opinion, options that cannot be missed are the Alcantara headlining (1,755 euros) and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with fifteen speakers (1,573 euros). What a sound comes out of this audio installation. Impressive. And if you have 787 euros left, order the sports steering wheel with carbon fiber inlay. A pleasure to look at and to hold on the road.
Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport
Speaking of pleasure: in this Maserati it is pleasure anyway. You have to realize that a Quattroporte is mainly made for comfortable rides. Up-tempo cornering is possible, but you notice from the agile character of the body that that is a bit outside its comfort zone. And believe us: it is still a real Maserati. Solidly built, really beautifully finished, an ear-pleasing exhaust sound and to see also a beautiful car. This Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport is a bella macchina in several respects. Such a trident in front of you does more to you than you think.
