Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport, just the name. But with such a name you also expect something. What about the Italian temperament of this thoroughbred Italian sports limousine?

Interesting times at Maserati. The brand is working hard, is fully committed to electrification and comes with various new models. Because just listen. The Ghibli Hybrid kicks off a real electro offensive. Maserati, for example, comes with a battery-electric version of the MC20 and the new GranTurismo will have an electric powertrain.

The S and S Q4 versions are right in the middle of the lineup. A lot of power and nice and smooth, that’s true, but not as powerful or fast as a Quattroporte GTS or Trofeo. What are we dealing with then?

In the front, Maserati spoons a 2,979 cc V6 petrol engine with two turbos. Good for 430 hp at 5,750 rpm and 580 Nm between 2,250 and 4,000 rpm. Shifting is done with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. A gem, because it puts butter softly or with appropriate persuasiveness in the Sport position into all gears.

Yes, driving in this car is a special experience. Why? First of all there is that soundtrack that sounds from the four exhausts. Only at full throttle or in Sport position the Maserati roars a bit louder than normal. Not antisocially loud, by the way, but at a pleasant volume. In the interior, due to the necessary sound insulation, not much can be heard of this. Only when you hear the car from outside do you notice that the necessary dark brown musical notes come from the exhaust system.

Second, there’s the interior you stay in. sensational. Leather, aluminum, chrome, carbon. Everywhere you look. That’s partly because this Maserati is quite richly decorated, about which more in a moment. In any case, you will stay in a very pleasant cabin with comfortable seats and an eye for the smallest details, such as a beautiful timepiece centrally on the dashboard.

And is driving fantastico? Certainly in terms of driving comfort. This is truly a mile-eater in which you drive in one straight line to warmer places. This Maserati is also sporty, but do not expect super sports performance.

Still, it’s great how this Maserati builds up pace in corners, without it becoming dangerous. It’s a bit cliché, but the car is literally on the road like a rock. You always have control and grip, especially with the Q4 all-wheel drive version. It is especially the longer journeys where you really start to appreciate this Maserati.

You arrive at your destination fully rested. And during the entire ride you can continuously enjoy all the materials that the brand has used in the interior. The car is spacious too. May also be with a length of 5,262 mm. The wheelbase is 3.17 meters. That means plenty of legroom, even in the back. Driving this Maserati is great, but so is sitting in the back. This is a Maserati that you also like to drive.

This Maserati is not super fast, but pleasantly fast. It sprints to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 288 km/h. Great numbers. The fuel consumption is also good. At least, if you are a little calm with the accelerator. On average we came out at 1 out of 13. Given the potent power source and the higher weight, that’s really not a bad result.

In our opinion, options that cannot be missed are the Alcantara headlining (1,755 euros) and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with fifteen speakers (1,573 euros). What a sound comes out of this audio installation. Impressive. And if you have 787 euros left, order the sports steering wheel with carbon fiber inlay. A pleasure to look at and to hold on the road.

Speaking of pleasure: in this Maserati it is pleasure anyway. You have to realize that a Quattroporte is mainly made for comfortable rides. Up-tempo cornering is possible, but you notice from the agile character of the body that that is a bit outside its comfort zone. And believe us: it is still a real Maserati. Solidly built, really beautifully finished, an ear-pleasing exhaust sound and to see also a beautiful car. This Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport is a bella macchina in several respects. Such a trident in front of you does more to you than you think.
