La premi\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de la 80 est arriv\u00e9e sur le march\u00e9 en 1972, succ\u00e9dant \u00e0 l&rsquo;Audi F103, aujourd&rsquo;hui un peu oubli\u00e9e. D&rsquo;ailleurs, la deuxi\u00e8me variante la plus puissante de la F103 \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 vendue sous le nom d'\u00a0\u00bbAudi 80&Prime;. La nouvelle 80 \u00e9tait une alternative un peu plus luxueuse \u00e0 la Volkswagen Passat et rivalisait avec des mod\u00e8les tels que l&rsquo;Alfa Romeo Alfetta, l&rsquo;Opel Ascona, la Ford Taunus et la Triumph Dolomite. D&rsquo;ailleurs, l&rsquo;Audi \u00e9tait encore largement identique \u00e0 la Passat (bien que la Passat n&rsquo;ait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 disponible en tant que berline). Une distinction visuelle claire entre les deux marques et un positionnement v\u00e9ritablement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 d&rsquo;Audi sur le march\u00e9 n&rsquo;interviendront que plus tard.     <\/p>\n<p>La 80 n&rsquo;\u00e9tait d&rsquo;ailleurs que le deuxi\u00e8me mod\u00e8le Audi d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 sous la direction du nouveau propri\u00e9taire de la marque, Volkswagen. La pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente F103 utilisait encore largement des pi\u00e8ces Auto Union et DKW et poss\u00e9dait m\u00eame un moteur Mercedes-Benz. La nouvelle 80 est \u00e9quip\u00e9e de nouveaux moteurs \u00e0 essence quatre cylindres de 1,3 et 1,5 litre, d&rsquo;une puissance de 40 \u00e0 63 kW (54 \u00e0 86 ch). En 1973, la GT est apparue avec un moteur de 74 kW (101 ch). Outre une face avant remani\u00e9e &#8211; inspir\u00e9e de l&rsquo;Audi 100 r\u00e9cemment introduite &#8211; un break \u00e0 cinq portes a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 : l&rsquo;Avant. Autre nouveaut\u00e9, un moteur de 1,6 litre remplace le 1,5.
