The big new feature of the MG 4X is hidden under the floor. The battery pack has a capacity of 53.95 kWh and contains only 5 percent liquid electrolyte. This makes it, strictly speaking, not a full solid-state battery, but a semi-solid-state variant. The difference from a conventional lithium-ion battery? The chemistry provides better thermal stability, which means the battery performs better in extreme cold as well as heat. For Dutch winters with temperatures around freezing, this is a relevant advantage, because it is precisely then that regular EVs lose quite a bit of range. <\/p>\n
The result is impressive: 510 kilometers of range (according to the optimistic Chinese CLTC method) from a package smaller than what most competitors use. By comparison, many EVs in this segment require a 60-70 kWh battery to achieve similar figures. A smaller battery pack also means less weight – the MG 4X weighs just 1,485 kilograms – and potentially a lower purchase price. <\/p>\n
The MG 4X is the taller, tougher brother of the updated MG 4 hatchback. With a length of 4,395 mm, a width of 1,842 mm and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, MG positions the car as a direct competitor to the BYD Atto 2. In terms of design, the 4X shares its DNA with the hatchback, but with a face of its own. Think hefty air intakes, triangular headlights connected by a slim light bar and a panoramic glass roof. The rear end is reminiscent of the larger MG S5. <\/p>\n
Little is yet known about the interior, but the 4X is expected to share the infotainment system with the MG 4 hatchback. That screen was co-developed with smartphone manufacturer Oppo. Fine detail: there would be real physical buttons on the steering wheel and center console, something many drivers long for after the touchscreen glut of recent years. <\/p>\n
MG has already established a strong position in the Netherlands with affordable electric models. The current MG 4 is one of the most popular EVs in our country, thanks in part to its competitive price-performance ratio. The 4X can add an SUV variant that perfectly matches the Dutch preference for taller cars. The semi-solid-state technology makes the car extra interesting: if the promised range holds up in practice, you get more miles per euro than almost any competitor. <\/p>\n
Nothing has yet been announced about the price, engine power and exact market launch in Europe.
