Autocar<\/a>, Alpine chief Philippe Krief confirms that the platform of the new A110 is now being developed for fuel engines. That platform is the same as that of the spectacular Renault 5 Turbo 3E, a hardcore study model that shows what is technically possible. <\/p>\nMarket demands<\/h2>\n
Alpine’s change of direction is not an isolated one. In recent months, we have seen several sports car manufacturers backtrack from their electric plans. Porsche is considering scrapping the electric successors to the Boxster and Cayman, and Lamborghini has already cancelled its first all-electric model. <\/p>\n
The reason? Sporty drivers appear to be staying away from EV sports cars in droves. The lack of a gearbox, the high weight of the battery and the absence of engine noise are dealbreakers for many enthusiasts. That translates into disappointing sales figures. <\/p>\n
The current A110 proves the point<\/h2>\n
The current Alpine A110 is the perfect example of why a fuel engine in a sports car works so well. At about 252 to 300 horsepower, the turbocharged four-cylinder rear end is not the most powerful, but its low weight of about 1,100 pounds makes the A110 one of the most involving sports cars you can buy. <\/p>\n
In comparative tests, the A110 regularly wins over heavier and more expensive competitors such as the Lotus Emira. The secret is in the balance between weight, power and chassis. Exactly that balance comes under pressure when you hang a heavy battery pack in it. <\/p>\n
Will the fuel version come to the Netherlands?<\/h2>\n
Here we should make a side note. Krief emphasizes that although an internal combustion engine is being worked on, this “does not necessarily mean that that version will actually come.” Especially the strict European CO\u2082 regulations could throw a spanner in the works. <\/p>\n
The scenario of Alpine offering the fuel version exclusively in markets outside Europe – think Middle East or Asia – is real. “For now, we are focusing on Europe, but if a fuel model offers opportunities in other markets, we can take them,” Krief said. <\/p>\n
For the Dutch market, this means for now that the electric A110 remains the most likely option. By the way, with the current additional tax rate rules for EVs, an electric A110 could be quite interesting as a business lease car. The current A110 is listed with prices starting at around \u20ac70,000 and can be ordered from a handful of Dutch dealers. <\/p>\n
New body styles<\/h2>\n
In addition to the regular coupe, Alpine is also working on a Spider version and a 2+2 variant of the new A110. The latter is interesting: a four-seater Alpine is something we haven’t seen for years. This would put Alpine in direct competition with cars like the Porsche 718 Cayman – should it get a successor at all. <\/p>\n
Wait and see, but hopeful<\/h2>\n
Clearly, Alpine is keeping all options open to itself. The EV version is coming anyway, the gasoline engine is on the drawing board, and the platform is flexible enough for both powertrains. Whether we in the Netherlands end up with the choice depends on regulations and market conditions.
