Because this family SUV from Mazda is particularly conservative. And that starts with the powertrain. On the Dutch menu is purely a 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G 141 gasoline engine, mated to 24V Mazda M Hybrid technology with a brake-by-wire system. The latter ensures that energy is recovered during braking. The 2.5-liter engine – replacing the previous 2.0-liter base engine – produces an output of 104 kW (141 hp) and kicks out 238 Nm of torque. Compared to the outgoing 2.0-liter e-Skyactiv G, torque below 4,500 rpm is improved by 8 to 19%, depending on load and driving conditions. Extra torque down low, in other words.

Brake tow weight Mazda CX-5 2026

The Dutch importer supplies the Mazda CX-5 only with front-wheel drive and in combination with a six-speed automatic transmission. There is an all-wheel drive version, but you have to get it from abroad. The CX-5 with front-wheel drive and automatic transmission sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 187 km/h. The braked towing weight comes out to 2,000 kilograms, something that will make the corners of the mouth of many a caravan owner curl.

Mazda CX-5 (2026) is old-fashioned delicious, here’s why! – REVIEW – AutoRAI TV

Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv-Z coming soon!

So for now, no electric powertrain? Nope, and no plug-in hybrid or normal hybrid either? Nope. But there is light shining at the end of the tunnel. In 2027, the Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv-Z will debut. A promising new engine with a 2.5-liter swept volume and four cylinders. The block meets the Euro7 standard and uses so-called ultra-lean burn (lambda-one) technology for exceptionally low consumption. The engine – which is designed as part of a hybrid powertrain – speaks of a gasoline engine with an exceptionally efficient combustion process that you can almost speak of’ ultimate combustion. But: it will fit in 2027.

Until then, the two-point-five is the only powertrain. Although on paper the powertrain is an MHEV, in practice you don’t notice anything about it. To your senses, you’re just driving a conventional gasoline-powered car. The average fuel consumption on paper comes out at 7.0 liters per 100 kilometers. That is equivalent to 1 on 14.3.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine of the new Mazda CX-5 2026

Cylinder shutdown

Mazda does mention the following: “To further reduce fuel consumption during daily driving, the engine is equipped with a cylinder deactivation system that imperceptibly turns off two of the four cylinders at low load.” Take the term “imperceptible” with a grain of salt, because in some situations you do feel some slight vibration when the engine is running on two cylinders. We also noticed this during a test drive in the Mazda CX-30 e-Skyactiv G 140 M Hybrid. Some people do not notice it, while others do. The advice: test drive to determine whether you experience this as disturbing.

Anything but disturbing

What you experience as anything but disturbing is the range of space. The third-generation Mazda CX-5 has a length of 4.69 meters, making it about 11.5 centimeters longer than its predecessor. The car is also 15 mm wider and 30 mm higher than the previous model. The extra length centimeters have been added mainly to the wheelbase: it grows from 2.70 to 2.81 meters. And that difference is most noticeable in the interior space. In the rear, you enjoy lots of legroom and plenty of headroom. The rear door is 70 mm wider. As a result, the entrance area has grown significantly, making the installation of child seats child’s play. The combination of a wider entrance and a lower hip point makes entry and exit easier for occupants of all ages.

The space in the back of the CX-5 is impressive.

Luggage space Mazda CX-5

The luggage space grows from 521 to 583 liters, an increase of more than 60 liters. Folding down the rear seats (40:20:40) creates 2,019 liters of cargo volume, which is 381 liters more than the previous model. By making the cargo floor about 45 mm deeper, items such as strollers can now be stored upright. An 18 mm lower loading height also makes loading easier.

The interior

In the interior, however, there is a change in style. Broadly speaking, the layout of the dashboard has been retained, but gone is the oh-so-familiar rotary-selection module that allowed you to walk blindly through the infotainment system, even while driving. Too bad that is gone. From now on, you have to rely on a touchscreen, either 12.9- or 15.6-inch, depending on the version. The system has built-in Google, Google Maps, Google Assistant and, of course, access to Google’s PlayStore where you can download various apps. Google Gemini will be introduced at a later stage.

The operation of the system is basically fine. There is a slight learning curve. The ADAS systems have unnecessarily cumbersome abbreviations such as ELK, SBS, PDA and BSM. Surely that could be simpler, right Mazda? Think of your buyers! In addition, some driving assistance systems are again hidden in underlying menus. This makes you feel like you are doing a little too much in the system. It is nice that Mazda has added a mute button to the left of the steering column to silence the speed alert.

A look at the interior of the new 2026 Mazda CX-5

Good seating position

A strong point of the CX-5 was always the seating position. That is still excellent in this third generation. You sit on fine furniture and the adjustability of the steering column is also well done. You sit sufficiently low and the seats offer sufficient support. The new steering wheel also fits comfortably in the hand and is also easy to operate with clear buttons. The digital instrumentation is easy to read and calm in its layout. There is no question of high-gloss black plastics. Everything is wonderfully matte and therefore quiet to the eye.

How does the Mazda CX-5 drive?

To be perfectly honest, we were not very pleased with the electric Mazda 6th. Yes, it was comfortable, but it didn’t feel like a true Japanese Mazda in anything. That Mazda still has a knack for making a tasty driver’s car is proven by this third-generation CX-5. What a blissful SUV. Fine steering feel, pleasant damping, a communicatively strong suspension, this is what makes us happy. This is what you call a Mazda. In its segment, it is one of the top performers when it comes to engagement. The conventional powertrain also feels perfectly at home in this CX-5. It produces a pleasant hum, is well-paced and the six-speed automatic also shifts sufficiently quickly. You can also shift gears yourself, either with the lever or with flippers (in the Homura version). Shifting gears with the lever is done correctly: pulling is upshifting and pushing is downshifting. Well, this is a car to be happy about, especially if you want to have fun on a mountain pass in addition to your usual commute.

Four versions

The all-new Mazda CX-5 is available in four trims: Prime-Line, Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura. Associated with these are the following starting prices.

CX-5 Prime-Line: 45,990 euros

CX-5 Centre-Line: 47,990 euros

CX-5 Exclusive-Line: 49,990 euros

CX-5 Homura: 51,990 euros

Why so expensive? Well, that is of course a consequence of Mazda’s engine choice. An old-school gasoline engine results in somewhat higher CO2 emissions. In this case, a minimum of 157 and a maximum of 159 g/km. And then, in the current tax climate of the Netherlands, you are considerably “upside down. For example, you pay 15,726 euros in BPM for the Prime-Line and even 16,320 euros in BPM for the other versions. Perhaps wait a while for that Skyactiv-Z engine, then? It will surely get lower CO2 emissions.

Conclusion review Mazda CX-5

The new generation Mazda CX-5 is an attractive car in many ways. It looks sleek, drives comfortably and is exceptionally spacious. In terms of infotainment, it is right up to date, but in terms of powertrain, it still feels very old-school and that results in a car that feels analogous. You can see that as a positive or negative. One thing is certain: Mazda has listened very carefully to its clientele. And those are mostly caravan owners. Anyone who has to take a hybrid car and caravan up hills with a dead battery will come out cold. There is too little power to keep the combination going.

In this CX-5, you don’t suffer from that. The four-cylinder gasoline engine always performs and is on point. A conventional choice, then, but a sensible one with buyers in mind. Do you want to plug in? There are plenty of alternatives, such as a Toyota RAV4 PHEV (starts at 49,796 euros, may tow 2,000 kilograms) or a braked Ford Kuga PHEV (from 40,000 euros, 2,100 kilograms of braked towing weight). Want a carefree vacation without loading? There’s a CX-5 waiting for you. And would you prefer some more hybrid technology? Then wait for the Skyactiv-Z coming in 2027. At least with this new Mazda CX-5, you know what you’re buying.

Loyal buyers

CX-5 buyers are often so satisfied with their CX-5 that they choose the same nameplate again next time. “Over 40 percent of our CX-5 customers choose a CX-5 again,” says Marieke Mantje, spokeswoman for Mazda Motor Netherlands. “It is sincerely a very loyal buyer group. So we can already proudly report that 300 units of the new CX-5 have already been sold. In fact, since the CX-5’s market launch in the Netherlands, 45,911 units have already been sold. That says something about its popularity.”

Technical specifications Mazda CX-5 2026

Mazda CX-5 e-SKYACTIV G 2.5 (141 HP)

Drive: FWD

Transmission: 6AT

Engine type: I4 DOHC 16 valves

Engine capacity: 2,488 cc

Bore x stroke: 89 x 100 mm

Fuel injection system: direct injection

Compression ratio: 13.0:1

Emission management system: 3-way catalytic converter

Maximum power: 104 kW (141 hp) / 4,500 – 5,000 rpm

Maximum torque: 238 Nm / 3,500 – 3,750 rpm

Top speed: 187 km/h

Acceleration 0-100 km/h: 10.5 s

Fuel Type: 95RON

WLTP fuel consumption: 7.0 l/100km

CO2 emissions (combined): 157-159 g/km

Emission standard: Euro 6e

Fuel tank: 56 liters

Battery: 24V

Conservative Why analogous?
