The name X-Trail refers directly to the car’s purpose. The “X” stands for extreme activities, while “Trail” refers to its ability to manage off the beaten path as well. At launch, Nissan positioned the model as a true SUV that combined sportiness with practicality. According to Shinchiro Irie, Program Design Director, the model appealed to a wide audience from the start. “With its simple, practical and robust design, the car particularly appealed to young families who like to be active outdoors and people with active lifestyles.” <\/p>\n
Since its introduction in spring 2001, the basics of the X-Trail have remained largely unchanged. Functionality and usability in everyday life are the focus, combined with the ability to drive in a variety of conditions. Satoru Tanaka, Chief Product Specialist, sums up the philosophy behind the model: “The X-Trail should be a functional crossover that adapts to every stage of life. Design should never get in the way of functionality, and functionality should not limit design.” <\/p>\n
Over the years, the X-Trail built a solid international position. The SUV became popular in Africa, Oceania, Asia and South America, among others. Starting with the third generation, the model was also sold in the United States under the Rogue name. There, the car grew to become Nissan’s best-selling model, and it still is. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Nissan X-Trail is entering its fourth generation. This builds on the model’s well-known features, but also adds hybrid technology. For example, the current version uses Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid propulsion technology and e-4ORCE. <\/p>\n
Today, the Nissan X-Trail is sold in 95 countries. More than eight million units have now been delivered worldwide. In the United Kingdom alone, more than 167,400 X-Trail models have been registered since 2001. <\/p>\n
