To see if the new Omoda 9 SHS actually achieves those promised kilometers without stopping at a gas station or charging station, we crisscross the Netherlands. At the starting point next to the young Chinese brand’s headquarters in Amsterdam, we tape off both the fuel valve and the charging gate and set off north. So what do you run into, and what do you notice? We’ll take you by the incremental mileage. <\/p>\n

Mileage 17.6: full tank, nearly full battery<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first meters of our journey offer a great opportunity to get to know the car on duty better. The Omoda 9 SHS is the brand’s flagship, equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain – the SHS in the type designation stands for Super Hybrid System. It has a rather large battery pack of nearly 35 kilowatt hours that should be good for an electric driving range of about 145 kilometers. As soon as you start, the car starts in its electric mode, but depending on conditions it can switch between series hybrid and parallel hybrid, letting the gasoline engine and electric motors work together as favorably as possible. In any case, what is already noticeable between Amsterdam and Lelystad is the pleasant quiet on board the spacious cabin. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Mileage 58.4: 73 percent battery remaining<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the battery percentage quietly drops, a little more explanation about Omoda. Is this yet another Chinese car brand coming to the Netherlands? In a way, yes, but Omoda is an interesting one. It is one of the brands in the portfolio of Chery, which is among the top 5 car manufacturers in the world. Besides Omoda, it also immediately brings Jaecoo to the Netherlands: that is the group’s adventurous off-road brand, while Omoda is the more luxurious alternative. In the 9 SHS you lack little, we realize while the built-in cat paws subtly massage our lower back. <\/p>\n

Mileage 152.3: battery not yet empty<\/strong><\/p>\n

Omoda claims you can drive 145 kilometers per charge on the battery pack, but by now we have 152.3 behind it and there is still 30 percent charge in the batteries! There’s a reason for that, it turns out: to have a power buffer (for driving in zero-emission zones in inner cities, for example), the Omoda keeps some electricity in reserve for as long as possible. So we’ve started consuming fuel in the meantime. Although you won’t hear it, because the gasoline engine does its job whisper quietly. <\/p>\n

Mileage 314.8: small point of improvement<\/strong><\/p>\n

After visiting Groningen, we roll through Drenthe and set course for the end point of the first day of travel. The Omoda 9 SHS turns out to be a very fine travel car: besides being quiet and smooth, its powertrain is also quite powerful. You have an electric motor on the front axle and one on the rear axle and together with the 140 hp gasoline engine, the whole system is good for 395 kilowatts or 530 hp of power. That gives a lot of comfort. We do discover the first small point of improvement to the car: you can set the regenerative braking in three modes, only you have to do it each time via the touch screen in the center of the dashboard. A system with buttons or flippers on the steering wheel would be better. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Mileage 523.8: why not electric?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a legitimate question: why is the brand new Omoda 9 SHS not electric? Well, the brand itself says this: in China, they see that buyers in the higher SUV segment are less likely to want an all-electric car. They want to cover most miles electrically, but also the comfort of carefree longer trips without charging stress. Then a so-called “extended range plug-in hybrid” like this is a great solution. <\/p>\n

A second reason is price. A full-size EV has fewer emissions, but is basically a lot more expensive to buy. To get a decent driving range, it often contains a very large battery pack of just 100 kWh instead of 35. And those battery cells are still the most expensive part of such a car. Then Omoda could never offer such a large family SUV for around 53,000 euros. <\/p>\n

Mileage 644: welcome to South Limburg<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the border of the Netherlands and Belgium, we stop for a traditional Limburg vlaai (flan), which by the way has recently become a protected regional product. It is striking how pleasant it is to travel without range anxiety: we have now traveled 644 kilometers without recharging or refueling and the car indicates that it can still travel 497 kilometers on its fuel tank as well as having twenty percent battery charge left. That peace of mind feels good, on the way to our second overnight stay in Maastricht. <\/p>\n

Mileage 896.7: ping-ponging between the lines<\/strong><\/p>\n

By now we have seen just about every province in our country, except Zeeland. As we head for the southwest of our country, the Omoda 9 SHS still convinces as an above-average travel car: the seats are comfortable, the audio system helps us pass the time with pleasant sounds, the “flying fish” suspension behaves smoothly and pleasantly. Only some driving assistance systems could still use some tuning: sometimes the lane assistant ping-pongs between the left and right white lines of your lane. The car is most pleasant to drive when you are in control: then you devour the miles remarkably easily. <\/p>\n

Mileage 1004.4: Zeelanders benne zuunig<\/strong><\/p>\n

In our country’s proverbial most frugal province, it’s time to talk about costs. Through our social media channels, several people responded that it is ridiculous to do this reportage with a PHEV. For example, someone claimed that his “old Audi A6 3.0 TDI also easily gets a thousand kilometers on a tank. That may be true, but diesels simply have greater disadvantages. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

While a diesel is economical, it also releases a lot of muck from the exhaust compared to a gasoline-powered car: a lot more nitrogen oxides, more tiny soot particles that are seriously bad news for your lungs. Not for nothing does the Dutch government tax diesel cars with much higher motor vehicle taxes: an Audi A6 3.0 TDI will soon cost you around 600 to 700 euros per quarter. That’s twice as much as this large, also quite heavy Omoda 9 SHS. Moreover, you can cut fuel costs considerably by driving electric as much as possible. <\/p>\n

Mileage 1041.9: Reserve light is on<\/strong><\/p>\n

As we roll back into South Holland, the time has come: our reserve light has come on! After over a thousand kilometers, we are nearing the end of our fuel and power reserves. And that’s even though we didn’t even restrain ourselves enormously: forward, we barely let the speed exceed 110 kilometers per hour, but we didn’t hang between trucks like a meek sheep either. And the Omoda 9 SHS is not exactly a docile sheep: if you want to accelerate full speed from 90 to 120, it takes less than three seconds. So yes: plenty of power. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Mileage 1111: …and counting<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the Bridge restaurant across the A4 near Schiphol Airport disappears in the rearview mirror, the numbers on the dashboard of the Omoda 9 SHS keep climbing. And yes, there are the four digits we have been hoping for for three days: 1111 kilometers! The previously promised goal has been achieved: this large, spacious family car reaches over eleven hundred kilometers on one fuel load and one supply of electricity without too much trouble. And the great thing is: when the car was returned to Amsterdam, the counter stood at 1139 kilometers and there was still about 15 percent left in the batteries. Impressive!<\/p>\n

‘Well, if I put that many batteries and a 70-liter fuel tank in a Toyota Aygo, I can easily achieve that too,’ responds an AutoRAI follower on Instagram. Thanks for your constructive addition… Because indeed, the Omoda 9 SHS is a big car that doesn’t so much excel in extreme economy. But it is certainly above-average in efficiency, extremely employable, and also far more versatile than many a car. Just think: in a Toyota Aygo you can’t take five people in all the space, you don’t have heated and cooled massage seats, no huge glass roof, no 530 horsepower and no 1,500 kilos of braked trailer weight. Just to name a few… <\/p>\n
