It includes a revision of vehicle testing and assessment procedures, along with a new assessment methodology built around four core stages of safety: safe driving, accident prevention, crash protection and post-accident safety.

Haddon Matrix

The new approach, based on the principles of the Haddon Matrix, tests safety technologies on a phase-by-phase basis, but also allows evaluation of solutions that work across multiple phases. These sweeping updates to the evaluation system provide more structure, clarity and flexibility as safety technologies become increasingly complex and intertwined. The testing protocols will therefore be updated every three years.

Several changes have been made to EuroNCAP’s testing program in response to consumer feedback. Driver-assistance systems, which have been criticized for disruptive warnings or intrusive interventions, are being assessed not only for their ability to prevent accidents on the test track, but also while driving in real-world conditions, with the goal of improving consumer acceptance.

New expanded test scenarios are introduced to improve the robustness of accident prevention systems, particularly under conditions more representative of real-world conditions.

Wider spectrum of occupant body sizes

The assessment of crash protection is expanded to include a broader spectrum of occupant body sizes, from children to smaller and taller adults, using full-scale crash tests, laboratory sled tests and advanced virtual simulations to increase accuracy and promote more adaptive safety systems.

New requirements for the post-accident phase include requiring electrically operated exterior door handles to remain functional for easier rescue and requiring proper isolation of the high-voltage battery pack in electric vehicles, among other updates to support emergency services.

Preventing serious injury

Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of EuroNCAP, said the updated protocols ensure that advanced safety technology is used where it is needed most – saving lives and preventing serious injuries on European roads.

“Every three years, we review our star rating criteria with the simple goal of reducing vehicular fatalities and serious injuries. The 2026 protocols further strengthen the rigor and relevance of our tests and reward vehicles that perform well in all phases of safety – before, during and after an accident. The updates to the protocols ensure that EuroNCAP’s tests, analyses and ratings remain the definitive guide for consumers who value an independent guide to the safety of the latest cars.

EuroNCAP continues to improve safety standards in all aspects of vehicle design, and the 2026 protocols fulfill this commitment by encouraging manufacturers to implement and further develop life-saving technologies. The intended result is better protection for occupants and all road users through more effective driver assistance systems, robust crash prevention, enhanced crash protection and improved post-crash care.”

Protocols 2026 at a glance

Starting in 2026, EuroNCAP’s ratings will be structured around four safety phases, each rated by up to 100 points and expressed as a percentage. Minimum thresholds will continue to apply to each stage, which together determine the final star rating.

The safety phases are:

Safe Driving – Reviews vehicle technologies and features that contribute to a safer driving experience for the driver and occupants.

Accident prevention – Evaluates systems that help prevent accidents or reduce their severity through warnings or autonomous interventions.

Crash protection – Evaluates the performance of traditional crash protection elements, including vehicle structure, seat belts, airbags and head restraints, to reduce injuries to occupants, pedestrians and cyclists.

Post-accident Safety – Focuses on the “golden hour” of emergency response through post-accident information and assistance systems.

Phase one: safe driving

EuroNCAP will place greater emphasis on driver monitoring technologies that ensure attention and engagement behind the wheel, with a focus on improved system reliability and user acceptance. Points will be awarded to advanced systems that monitor driver performance in real time.

To achieve the highest scores, vehicles must not only employ continuous eye and head tracking, but also link driver condition information to the sensitivity of driver assistance systems. Extra credit is given to technologies that can recognize signs of drug or alcohol use and to systems that can safely stop the vehicle when the driver becomes unresponsive.

New reviews of the human-machine interface (HMI) are introduced, evaluating the placement, clarity and usability of key control functions – including the presence of physical buttons for frequently used functions, which consumer feedback indicates can reduce distractions.

Vehicles that can detect whether seat belts are being worn correctly -and that can optimize the seat belt and airbag system for different driver and passenger physiques – will receive higher scores. For the first time, the accuracy of speed limit information is verified during driving tests on public roads.

Phase two: accident prevention

The updated protocols introduce a more rigorous approach to testing accident prevention systems, including autonomous emergency braking assistance and lane support systems. Based on long-term testing experience, EuroNCAP is expanding the scenarios to better reflect real-world crash patterns, including urban situations where vehicles regularly encounter motorized two-wheelers, cyclists and pedestrians.

The smoothness and intuitiveness of operation during daily use, particularly with lane support, now counts in the rating and responds to consumer concerns about intrusive or unpredictable interventions.

Cars that can recognize and reduce risks from pedal switching (accidentally pressing the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal) will also be rewarded. This will be assessed as part of new tests for “low-speed collisions,” which include opening car doors toward cyclists (Cyclist Dooring).

Phase Three: Crash protection

EuroNCAP continues to develop its well-established crash test program with a renewed focus on passive safety. Starting in 2026, frontal crash tests take into account a wider range of driver and passenger physiques, including older occupants and children, supported by sled tests and advanced virtual simulations. Assessment of side impact protection will include tests against a nearby barrier, pole and on the far side via sled tests, also supported by advanced virtual simulations. There will also be an increased focus on pedestrian injury risk – particularly in structural zones around the windshield.

Phase four: Safety after an accident

New requirements for the post-accident phase include ensuring that electrically operated exterior door handles continue to function after an impact so that emergency services have easier access. Electric vehicles must also properly manage the insulation of their high-voltage battery.

Automated emergency calls must provide information about the number of occupants in the vehicle, which requires reliable detection even when seat belts are not fastened. These changes are intended to enable faster and more accurate post-accident assistance.

With the rise of electric vehicles, cars should be able to communicate the risk of battery fire to the driver after a crash and provide timely warnings if a battery fire occurs during charging or after an accident.

Biggest revision The update, the largest revision since the introduction of the overall rating system in 2009, goes into effect…
[94,93

post-165587","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-background-en","category-car-news

EuroNCAP in 2026: "Biggest revision of test protocols ever!" - All cars news

<meta property="og:description" content="Biggest revision The update, the largest revision since the introduction of the overall rating system in 2009, goes into effect in 2026.
