The idea for this striking campaign arose from a personal motivation. Tameling had to deal with cancer in his private life in recent years and felt the need to link his work as a car journalist to a goal that goes beyond horsepower, acceleration times and range. Driving a car as a means, not an end goal. “For the past year, I have been keeping track of my business and private mileage and resolved to donate one euro cent per mile driven to the Children’s Cancer Free Foundation, KiKa for short. Meanwhile, the counter has reached almost 60,000, so that’s already turning into a nice amount.” <\/p>\n
On “Third and Fourth Christmas Day,” Tameling decided to enlist the help of the AutoRAI audience and the rest of the Netherlands during a 24-hour day of action. “By being on the road for 24 hours, literally making miles, every meter driven became a symbol in the fight against pediatric cancer, a terrible disease that needs a solution soon. It is important to dwell on that, even though we have now stopped at most to load the car…” <\/p>\n
Playing a central role in Tameling’s action was the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, in which he had several valuable conversations. Among them, Roland spoke with 13-year-old Eveline; she suffered from leukemia from the age of two to six and shared her story poignantly. Donating followers and car enthusiasts also got on board, as well as Cesar Zuiderwijk rode along. The legendary Golden Earring drummer donated several items for the auction, which can still be bid on. The normally chatty Tameling is a little quiet himself. “What an insanely beautiful gesture, really very special!” <\/p>\n
In addition to BNs and compelling stories, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N convincingly grabbed the spotlight. “Think of this literally as a ‘vehicle’ to get even more attention for the campaign. The sportiest electric car of the moment – it’s such a fat thing! – stands out and combines impressive performance with emission-free driving. During this action it was more about endurance than sprints or cornering speed, but we also had fun with the car. Long stages, relatively short charging stops, nighttime hours when concentration was more of a challenge than the traffic itself. We drove through all the provinces of the Netherlands, but also quickly reached the top speed of 265 kilometers per hour in Germany. This makes it clear what 24 hours really means.” <\/p>\nIntermediate score: over 10,000 euros!<\/h2>\n
