You drive into town, can’t find a free parking space and see just enough room on the sidewalk to park your motorcycle. Is that even allowed, parking a motorcycle on the sidewalk? The short answer: not formally. The longer answer is a lot more nuanced. <\/p>\n

Important conditions<\/h2>\n

According to national traffic regulations, the sidewalk belongs exclusively to pedestrians. Parking vehicles, including motorcycles, is in principle not allowed there. Yet every motorcyclist will recognize that in many Dutch cities hardly any enforcement action is taken. This has everything to do with the so-called policy of tolerance pursued by many municipalities. As long as your motorcycle is not a nuisance, enforcers often look the other way. <\/p>\n

Never block passage<\/h2>\n

That “no hindrance” is immediately the most important condition. A motorcycle must never block the passage of pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or parents with strollers. In practice, this means that sufficient free space must be left on the sidewalk. Municipalities often use a guideline of about one and a half meters for this purpose. Blocking exits, building entrances or emergency doors is also out of the question. If you park your motorcycle in front of a storefront or porch, you will almost certainly be fined. <\/p>\n

Parking apps<\/h2>\n

Remarkably, paid parking can simply remain in effect in the process. Even if your motorcycle is parked on the sidewalk, the municipality can require you to pay parking fees if you are in a paid zone. More and more parking apps therefore offer the option of starting a session for motorcycles as well. This may feel a bit contradictory, but it does prevent an after-tax charge. <\/p>\n

General Municipal Regulation<\/h2>\n

Those who really want certainty cannot ignore local rules. Motorcycle parking policies vary from town to town and are set out in the General Municipal Regulations, also known as an APV. What is allowed in one city may be directly fined in another. Eindhoven is a good example of a city that regulates it relatively clearly. There you can park a motorcycle in the same places as a car, as well as on the sidewalk, as long as you don’t bother anyone. <\/p>\n

Motorcycle with sidecar<\/h2>\n

At the same time, there are clear prohibitions: not in front of doors, not near disabled parking spaces, not in loading and unloading zones and not in pedestrian areas where bicycles and mopeds are also barred. There are also nuances with blue zones. A motorcycle on two wheels may park there without a parking disc. As soon as there is a sidecar, the situation changes and a disc is required. Such details make it clear why general statements about motorcycle parking often fall short. So check carefully in advance what rules apply at your final destination. <\/p>\n

Parking motorcycle on the sidewalk abroad<\/h2>\n

Anyone who takes a motorcycle across the border quickly notices that tolerance in the Netherlands cannot be taken for granted. In many countries, parking on the sidewalk is simply prohibited, with no room for interpretation. Belgium is still somewhat similar to the Netherlands. Officially it is not allowed, but in practice it is sometimes allowed if enough free passage remains. Germany takes a similar line, with enforcement depending mainly on the situation at the spot. <\/p>\n

France is strict<\/h2>\n

France is a different story. In cities like Paris, parking is strictly controlled and fined, especially now that the city is actively working to reduce motorized traffic. Only in explicitly designated spots, sometimes even marked on the sidewalk, are you allowed to park there. There are exceptions for electric motorcycles in some French cities, but these too are locally regulated and change regularly. <\/p>\n

The common denominator, at home and abroad, is that local signs and markings are always leading. Where a municipality has designated motorcycle parking spaces, that is the safest choice. And where paid parking applies, you won’t escape the parking fees even with a motorcycle. <\/p>\n

\"Motorcycle<\/p>\n

Special parking spaces for motorcycles<\/h2>\n

Some municipalities also create special parking spaces for motorcycles, similar to special parking spaces for bicycles, often equipped with bicycle lean-to brackets<\/a>. They do this to reduce the ambiguity surrounding sidewalk parking. In busy inner cities, space is scarce and motorcycles parked “loose” on the sidewalk quickly cause discussions between enforcement officers, pedestrians and motorcyclists. Having separate motorcycle parking spaces creates clarity for everyone. <\/p>\n

Within the lines<\/h2>\n

Those motorcycle bays are often identified by a marking on the street or an under sign explicitly stating that the spot is intended for motorcycles. Sometimes they are former car parking spaces that have been converted, sometimes they are compact spaces in places where a car can barely fit. In many cases, several motorcycles are allowed to park in one space, as long as they stay neatly within the lines. A good example is the motorcycle parking bays at Schiphol Airport. As massive as the bike parking garage in the heart of Utrecht with thousands of bike racks<\/g>, it is not yet as massive at Schiphol. There are only dozens of motorcycle parking spaces. <\/p>\n

Creating order in the streetscape<\/h2>\n

The idea behind these special bays is primarily practical. They prevent motorcycles from ending up on sidewalks, increase accessibility for pedestrians, and give motorcyclists a legal and recognizable place to park their bikes. This makes them a relatively simple way for municipalities to bring order to the streets without banning motorcyclists from the city. <\/p>\n

Common sense<\/h2>\n

Ultimately, sidewalk parking is all about common sense and mutual respect. A motorcycle takes up little space, but that space is often badly needed by others. Those who take this into account and familiarize themselves with local rules significantly reduce the chances of annoyance and fines. For as tempting as it may sometimes be, what is tolerated remains legally something other than permitted. <\/p>\n
