What is the main message you want to convey with this new Corolla Concept?<\/h2>\n

“Most importantly, with this Corolla you can choose the powertrain that suits you best without having to compromise on style, functionality or space. That principle was central to the design process. The Corolla is, of course, a model with a tremendously long history; I think we are now at the thirteenth or fourteenth generation. Each generation has adapted to its time, but the name has always remained. That continuity of the Corolla label is something we very consciously want to preserve. <\/p>\n

We at Toyota have always tried to make the Corolla a little better each time. For us, it is the car for the majority of our customers: reliable, accessible and representative of what Toyota stands for. With this study model, we want to evoke that feeling again, but in a modern way. It is a way of showing that the Corolla is ready for the future, that the model is alive and kicking and that we are pushing the limits of what is possible. We want people to soon think, ‘The Corolla is back. And how!'” <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

“Good design is not just about being beautiful. It’s about solving problems”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"In<\/figure>\n

How far is this car actually from production? For example, is it eighty or ninety percent production ready? <\/h2>\n

“No, not that yet. It’s officially a concept car, our vision of what the Corolla of the future could be. We are not presenting it as a near-production model, but as a design direction, as an idea we are playing with. By the way, we did not put it up for competition or compare several proposals. This concept arose purely from the design team itself. We asked ourselves, “What do we think the ideal next Corolla would be? We developed that idea into this concept.”<\/p>\n

In your view, is this an evolution of the current Corolla, or just a revolution?<\/h2>\n

“I would say it’s largely a revolution. Of course you can evolve a model step by step, but at some point you have to dare to take a leap. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do here. The concept has dramatic proportions, a lower belt line and greatly improved forward visibility. These are all deliberate choices. Good design is not just about being beautiful. It’s about solving problems. In car design we sometimes get a little too fascinated by styling tricks, but in the end we have to go back to basics: better ergonomics, better visibility, more user comfort. At the same time, we wanted to offer the occupants a new experience. The interior space feels more spacious than you would expect. That combination – driving-oriented for the driver, surprisingly spacious for the passengers – is at the heart of this design. So yes, it’s a revolution, but one that builds on what the Corolla was always good at.”<\/p>\n

\"In<\/figure>\n

The Corolla is one of the best-selling cars in the world. With such success, many brands prefer to opt for evolution rather than revolution. Is the public ready for this? <\/h2>\n

“That’s exactly why we’re showing this concept. We want to test how people react. A concept car is in a way a market research on wheels. We show the model at auto shows and listen very carefully to what visitors, journalists and customers think of it. Is it too futuristic? Or just not innovative enough? This feedback is essential for us to determine which direction we will take with the next generation. So it is not the case that this model has already been established as the new Corolla. It is a design study, our interpretation of what the future of the Corolla could look like. But ultimately the public decides. Their reactions, their enthusiasm or criticism, that’s what determines whether this is the right move.”<\/p>\n

You are showing a sedan now, but the Corolla family also includes a hatchback, Touring Sports and Corolla Cross. How do you see that family in the future? <\/h2>\n

“I expect there will always be a Corolla family. The name has now become a brand in itself within Toyota. Exactly which body styles that will be depends on the region. In Europe, SUVs and crossovers are gaining ground at the expense of hatchbacks. In other markets, on the other hand, sedans are still popular. So it may well be that the next generation of Corollas will come in different forms. Personally, I would love to be able to work on the whole series, to create a cohesive family. The strength of the Corolla is that it has always adapted to what customers want. We want to keep that.”<\/p>\n

Do you think we will see elements of this concept in the next-generation Corolla?<\/h2>\n

“I certainly hope so. The basic architecture and proportions are most important to me. We designed the car as low as possible for better forward visibility, while maintaining maximum interior space. We also wanted to create space for different powertrains: gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric. This without any compromise on style or usability. In the past, with an electric variant you often had to compromise on something: less luggage space, a different design, you name it. With this study model, we want to show that this is not necessary. You can offer all powertrains and still retain the same look, functionality and spaciousness. That is an important design philosophy for us.”<\/p>\n

Are the dimensions similar to those of the current generation?<\/h2>\n

“Broadly speaking, yes. The length and width are similar to those of the current Corolla. Of course some of the proportions are a bit magnified – bigger wheels, slightly different proportions – but that’s part of a show car. After all, this is a vision, not an exact blueprint for production.”<\/p>\n

The interior looks remarkably mature, almost production-ready. Was that done on purpose? <\/h2>\n

“Thank you, but I don’t think the engineers would quite agree. We challenged them quite a bit. If you see the car in real life, you’ll notice that the dashboard is extremely low, which improves outward visibility. The center console is designed as a kind of free-standing “island. These are things we deliberately tried, to see how far we could go. The great thing at Toyota these days is that the collaboration between designers and engineers is very open. We as designers dream big, come up with crazy ideas, and then the engineers say, “Okay, give us some time, we’ll see what we can do. That interaction is enormously valuable. It ensures that designs are not only visually interesting, but also become technically feasible.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

How do you imagine the next-generation Corolla apart from this concept?<\/h2>\n

“Frankly, I see this concept itself as a harbinger of the next generation. Of course, no one knows exactly what the final product will look like. That also lies with the decisions in Japan. But if it’s up to me, this will form the basis. Honestly, the first reactions I see online are positive. People are responding enthusiastically to the design, which is a good sign for us. At the end of the day, this remains a vision. We’re trying something new, we’re challenging ourselves. If it continues, great. If not, we take the lessons and try again. Development at Toyota is always a process of experimentation and improvement.”<\/p>\n

And if the project does get the green light, is it a realistic step toward production?<\/h2>\n

“That depends on the technical feasibility. I’m not an engineer, so I know there are challenges, that makes sense. There are always details that in a show car can’t go one-to-one to production. Think of certain radius lines or panel shapes that are too complex for mass production. But that’s the beauty of concept cars: they show what’s possible and what we might be able to realize in a few years.”<\/p>\n

If you had to give one sentence that sums up this project, what would it be?<\/h2>\n

“The new Corolla Concept is a look to the future without compromise, a car that offers freedom in propulsion, but stays true to what the Corolla has always been: an accessible, practical, but now also inspiring Toyota for a new generation of drivers. Was that one sentence, haha?”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
