A sleek coupe with a battery and an electric motor. Not a converted gasoline car, but developed from the ground up as a full EV, with a usable range of 250 kilometers. And that was thirty years ago. The EV1 had a 137-hp electric motor, a whole array of heavy lead batteries (think of the 12V battery in your own car, but a whole lot of them) and an aerodynamic body that was so smooth that modern EVs envy it.      <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/EV1-2-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211772\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The car that wasn&#8217;t supposed to exist<\/h2>\n<p>There was only one problem: General Motors did not sell it. The EV1 was leased exclusively to a handful of progressive customers in California and Arizona. But when GM found the project too expensive, the company decided to recall and destroy all the cars.   Literally. They were pressed into square blocks of metal. No one could do anything about it because the cars were owned by GM. Many owners loved their EV1 and rebelled, but to no avail. Only a few escaped the shredder and ended up in museums.   <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Auction<\/h2>\n<p>But now, nearly thirty years later, one has unexpectedly turned up at auction in the US state of Georgia. The specimen is not from a showroom or museum, but was parked for years in a towing company&#8217;s outhouse. The windows are smashed in, the interior is full of leaves, the keys are missing and the car no longer runs. Still, there was tremendous interest.   <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GM-EV1-auction-1140x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211773\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">$104,000<\/h2>\n<p>The auction began with a bid of only $400. But within a few hours, the bids flew up. In the end, the counter ticked $104,000 &#8211; almost 90,000 euros converted. And that for a car hardly anyone has ever heard of.   <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GM-EV1-auction-2-1140x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211774\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hugely important<\/h2>\n<p>Yet that amount is actually still modest. After all, how often do you get the chance to own one of the most important cars ever made? The EV1 was actually the first modern electric car &#8211; except for a few hobby projects. It was the beginning of the electric era and inspired people like <a href=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/onderzoek-toont-aan-hoe-absurd-veel-klanten-tesla-is-kwijtgeraakt-door-de-politieke-uitspraken-van-elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a> to delve into electric driving.   <\/p>\n<p>And if in the future we drive only electric, and the gasoline car is seen as a warm-up phase of the automobile &#8211; an intermediate step, like the steam era once was for the train &#8211; then the EV1 will probably be remembered as the first really serious electric car. With that, it belongs among the most important cars ever built.
