Omoda is a young car manufacturer, founded in 2022 and actually operating in the Chinese market since 2023<\/a>. The brand’s Dutch launch was scheduled for 2024<\/a>, but it became this year. They are debuting two models: the electric Omoda 5 for the middle class (say, the segment of the Kia Niro or Volvo EX30) and the plug-in hybrid Omoda 9 for the upper middle class. Those should rather be placed between cars like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Toyota RAV4, or even more “premium” models like the Volvo XC60 or BMW X3. It is also the Omoda 9 that we are now introduced to. <\/p>\n

Prices Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Consumers are looking at prices more than ever, so let’s start there this time. The Omoda 9 is available from 52,900 euros. An amount to which at most 1,320 euros is added for a different body color. After all, in the Netherlands you always get the car as Premium. There is no option list. By the way, the color range unfortunately consists only of black, white and two shades of gray. <\/p>\n

Richly equipped as standard<\/strong><\/h2>\n

So no options, but the Omoda 9 does have a rich standard equipment. For the full list, we refer to the website<\/a> – which, remarkably, is shared with sister brand Jaecoo – but we do pick out a few highlights. For example, 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery and a panoramic roof. Also notable are the speakers incorporated into the front headrests. Seat heating and ventilation can be found on all seats. <\/p>\n

Furthermore, Omoda puts a lot of emphasis on technology, so there’s no shortage of that either. From a head-up display and extensive camera views from around the car to 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and comprehensive infotainment. A Wi-Fi hotspot with 4G connectivity and a voice assistant are present, as well as various driving modes and all the usual assistance and safety systems. <\/p>\n

Driveline Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the Netherlands, the Omoda 9 is always a plug-in hybrid, with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors providing all-wheel drive. The system output is a whopping 395 kW (537 hp) and maximum torque 650 Nm. This should get the car to 100 km\/h in just 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km\/h. By the way, the Omoda 9 does weigh a hefty 2,270 kg, good to know for road tax purposes. The braked towing weight is 1,500 kg. <\/p>\n

Practical Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Some practicalities at a glance. The Omoda 9 is always a five-passenger car, which also offers plenty of space in the back seat. In the very back there is room for a generous 660 liters of luggage. With the rear seats flat, you come to 1,783 liters. That volume is mainly in the depth of the luggage compartment, because the high floor combined with the sloping roofline means that the height is relatively limited. <\/p>\n

First impression Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first impression of the Omoda 9 is good. The exterior design may be somewhat generic, but it does give the impression of a luxury car. That impression is confirmed in the interior. We see some stylistic features of luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz and also some Cadillac. Omoda will not win the originality prize for the design, but is that a bad thing? It looks fine and the use of materials is at a high level for this price range. Everywhere you see beautiful and soft materials. Well, almost everywhere. What is striking is that the buttons on the steering wheel, something you often touch, again feel a bit cheap. Also, some scratches are already appearing on the hard side of the center console. <\/p>\n

It is also nice that there are still quite a few physical buttons for setting certain things. They’re just not all in logical locations. The seat adjustment knob is right next to the left side mirror. The adjustment knob for the side mirrors is hidden out of your field of vision, right next to the steering column. When we wanted the climate control to blow a little less loudly, we suddenly switched to Offroad driving mode. We were accidentally one dial too far to the left, but you wouldn’t expect a driving mode selection there. <\/p>\n

OK, some functions and settings take some searching, but once you know where they are, you quickly get used to them. The main point of improvement of the interior is the seating position. Even with the seat in the lowest position, you still sit quite high. Both in absolute terms and in relation to the rest of the interior. On the one hand, this gives you an extra good overview of the car and the traffic, but on the other hand, it does make you look prominently at the large ‘radar block’ behind the rear view mirror. We have nothing to say about the comfort of the seats. <\/p>\n

Driving Assistants Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On the first drive, we soon make a stop to set up the various driving assistants to our liking. In the default setting, they are very diligent and you hear continuous beeps for all sorts of things. Some of those beeps must by law be turned back on every drive, but fortunately there are hotkeys for turning them off again. <\/p>\n

When we last drove the Jaecoo J7<\/a> – a smaller model from its sister brand – the driving assistants had room for improvement. In the Omoda 9, everything already works a little better, but there is still some homework to be done. Again, for example, the adaptive cruise control reacts very abruptly to predecessors. Lane assist works fine in itself, but the related automatic steering assist sometimes refuses service for unknown reasons. Also, the traffic sign recognition is usually wrong. That’s not even a matter of reading a sign on a parallel road. For example, how does the system figure out that we are only allowed 15 mph on the highway? <\/p>\n

Driving characteristics Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When you bring the driving assistants to the background with the right settings, fine driving characteristics remain. In practice, you don’t feel like you are driving a 500-plus horsepower car, but that doesn’t matter. Just not. The Omoda 9 is not about sporty performance, but about comfort. You have more than enough power to merge smoothly when necessary, for example, but it mainly invites you to cruise leisurely. Because the electric motor is always running, you do have the immediate response of an EV. Also the silence, because you hardly notice if the gasoline engine is active. <\/p>\n

Although it may sway just a little too much on long bumps (you can feel the weight in that regard), the soft-tuned suspension provides plenty of comfort in most situations. There are cars with tighter handling, but why should every car have sports suspension? The focus is clearly on comfort, and that’s a fine choice, too. A welcome change from the many “sport-tuned” competitors. <\/p>\n

Practice consumption Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to the WLTP cycle, the Omoda 9 has an average fuel consumption of 1.4 l\/100 km. It is well known by now that the practical consumption of a plug-in hybrid depends greatly on how often you charge it and what kind of miles you drive next. It is therefore difficult to give a general indication. We do have some indications. <\/p>\n

The 34.5 kWh battery should be good for 145 km of range in EV mode, which is quite a lot for a plug-in hybrid. In practice, at least, we got to over 100 km, although it must be said that the Omoda 9 automatically switches to hybrid mode when the battery gets to about 30-25%. <\/p>\n

Gasoline consumption in hybrid mode was around 5.0 l\/100 km on most trips. In the most unfavorable scenario, a highway drive where the engine also started generating power for the battery, we saw around 7.5 l\/100 km on the trip computer. <\/p>\n

Conclusion Omoda 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Omoda 9 is one of many now newcomers to the market. On a detail level, the Omoda 9 lacks some sophistication, which you will find in its competitors. On the other hand, the Omoda 9 is competitively priced. For the approximately 50,000 euros you get a lot and a similarly equipped competitor is soon more expensive. The Omoda 9 may not be truly distinctive, but it does offer excellent value for money and, for a plug-in hybrid, a fairly large electric range. That still makes it worth considering. <\/p>\n
