Note: if your car is on public roads, it must have at least third-party insurance. Usually you take out a standard car insurance policy for a year, with fixed terms and conditions. However, a flexible policy offers more freedom of choice. For example, you can cancel monthly, temporarily adjust the coverage or, in combination with a lower premium, only pay for the kilometers you actually drive. The kilometers driven are then registered via a dongle in the car.

How does flexible car insurance work in practice?

Taking out flexible car insurance is much the same as taking out regular car insurance. You choose an insurer, fill in information about yourself and your car and choose from cover types such as third-party, third-party+ or All-risk. The difference is in the conditions: you are not stuck with a year’s contract, but can often cancel per month or adjust the coverage.

An example: do you only need your car intensively for the vacations? Then you can temporarily suspend the insurance for the periods when you don’t use the car intensively, switch it back to minimum third-party coverage or – if you store your car in the garage for a longer period of time or in any case take it off the public roads. As soon as you use the car intensively again, simply switch back to WA+ or All-risk or lift the suspension.

Differences from regular car insurance

Traditional car insurance is usually taken out on a yearly basis. Changing or canceling in the interim is often difficult and can incur additional costs. Flexible insurance on the other hand:

usually has a short term (terminable per month);

offers the option of changing coverage on an interim basis;

can operate on the basis of actual usage (e.g., per mile driven);

targets motorists who do not need their car on a daily basis or want more freedom.

Coverage: WA, WA+ and All-risk

Like a regular auto insurance policy, a flexible policy lets you choose from the three familiar types of coverage:

Third Party Liability (WA): the minimum, legally required coverage. Damage to others is covered, but not damage to your own car.

WA+: also called limited casco. In addition to the WA coverage, it also provides coverage for damage caused by fire, storm, theft and broken windows, among other things.

All-risk: the most comprehensive coverage that also covers damage to your own car due to your own fault.

The difference with flexible car insurance is that you can often change this coverage on a monthly basis. If you hardly use the car for a period, then you choose WA. If a longer vacation with many miles is planned, then you can upgrade to All-risk for that period.

Benefits of flexible car insurance

The main benefits are:

freedom in duration: you are not immovably attached to a contract;

adjust according to use: useful if your car is sometimes in storage for months;

Cost savings: by paying less during periods of low usage;

customized coverage: you customize the insurance to your life situation.

For those who usually don’t drive much, have a second car or use the car seasonally, this can save quite a bit in premiums.

Disadvantages of flexible car insurance

Flexibility sounds ideal, but there are drawbacks. The premium per month may be a bit higher than that for an annual policy. That’s because insurers have less certainty about the term and their risk. Also, not all additional benefits (such as no-claims accrual) may be equally beneficial.

Not all insurers offer this option, so you have fewer choices. Terms and conditions vary widely among providers, so good comparison is necessary.

No-claims discount and multiple flexible insurance policies

As with regular car insurance, you can build up no-claim discount with a flexible variant. If you drive damage-free, you will build up no-claim years and your premium will decrease. However, this system differs per insurer. Some companies use a separate scheme.

If you have multiple cars and take out multiple flexible car insurance policies, you may get additional discounts. Again, this depends on the provider. So it is wise to check this well in advance.

Conditions to consider

Before you buy flexible car insurance, there are some terms and conditions that are important.

Minimum term often at least one month.

Adjusting coverage is not always possible daily, sometimes only monthly.

Premium often slightly higher than with an annual contract.

For the no-claims rule, check how claim-free years are recorded.

Payment usually by direct debit each month.

Otherwise, the same basic rules apply as with any car insurance policy, such as mandatory reporting of damage and reporting changes in usage or mileage.

Do all insurance companies offer flexible car insurance?

No, not every insurer offers flexible car insurance. The concept is relatively new and still developing. Large insurers are experimenting with this form, often under the banner of “pay-per-use” or “on-demand car insurance. New, digital insurers in particular are capitalizing on this, as they manage their services entirely online and with apps.

So it’s smart to compare carefully and see which insurers offer this and under what terms. The differences in coverage, flexibility and premium can be large.

Is flexible car insurance for you?

Flexible car insurance offers freedom and convenience. You adjust your coverage to your usage, can often cancel on a monthly basis, and thus pay only when your car is actually in use. Especially if you drive infrequently or use the car seasonally, this can greatly benefit you.

On the other hand, the premium per month is often higher and not all insurers offer this option. Also, the arrangement around claim-free years may differ.

So it is important to carefully assess your car usage and requirements beforehand. If you drive daily and intensively, then regular car insurance is the best choice. However, if you use your car sporadically or want maximum flexibility, then flexible car insurance may be a logical choice.

Insuring your car is required by law, but not everyone needs to insure their car in the same way.
