Automotive excitement<\/h2>\n

A Sunday afternoon in August. Taking a walk with the dog. In the distance, I see five Donkervoorts passing through the village. “How cool,” I think. With a slight acceleration and a mild form of automotive excitement, I walk with doggie dearest toward the street in question. But alas, all the Dutch splendor has already passed. So we walk on. But then… Far in the background I hear five-cylinder roars. A turbo blows off. It can’t be? And yes, once again about five Donkervoorts pass by. How wonderful! And well, then I also start to itch. Then I want to drive. You know how it is. <\/p>\n

Nice and pure, nice and simple<\/h2>\n

And so it happened. Upon returning home I cranked up the hobby car to go for a spin. Camera along, because you never know what beautiful places you might come across. Time to drive open, to enjoy. Pure too, because the car in question has no power steering or brakes and certainly no ABS or ESP. In short: pure as can be. Or in other words: it couldn’t be simpler. <\/p>\n

Breda Airport<\/h2>\n

By now the kilometers are flying under the car. My final destination is Breda Airport. That sounds like a huge, international airport, but in practice it’s nothing much. A runway and some hangars. That’s all. But it is a cool location, which is why it attracts many hobby pilots, especially on weekends. An adjoining restaurant also attracts families on a sunny Sunday who enjoy a cup of coffee or tea on the terrace with some goodies. And lo and behold, as I approach the parking lot, I see them: Donkervoorts. <\/p>\n

36 Donkervoorts<\/h2>\n

This time in a much larger quantity. No less than 36 copies! I spontaneously get goose bumps and think “yes!”. Can I immediately take some nice pictures with the camera I brought. So I parked the 485S next to a wine red D8 GTO RS, got out and started clicking. The nice thing about such a meeting is that you also talk to other people\/enthusiasts. And the more people I talk too, the more people feel the same way. There seems to be more of a need for simplicity. <\/p>\n

Irritations over ADAS<\/h2>\n

The conversations then focus on the interference found in modern cars today. Also known as ADAS, an abbreviation for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. In normal Dutch, then, we talk about driver assistance systems. A lane assistant, a collision prevention system, adaptive cruise control, you know the drill. In itself, fine systems if they work well, but ADAS comes with the necessary bells and whistles that regularly make themselves heard in the car. Moreover, ADAS makes driving increasingly boring. The Lane Assistant, for example, gives the feeling that you are not steering yourself. That is the worst feeling for the steering man or woman. <\/p>\n

Feelers affected<\/h2>\n

The natural flow of driving is disappearing because of ADAS. Behind every action, a computer thinks with you. In my case, that strongly disrupts my own “natural” feelers to drive fluidly through traffic. And that causes irritation. Driving yourself is only possible if you switch everything off. Fortunately, the latter is becoming easier and easier, because car manufacturers also know very well that all those “driving assistance systems” ruin driving pleasure. For that reason, automakers build in a simple button to quickly disable desired systems, with the exception of ABS and ESP, of course. That can’t even be turned off in most cars. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

The charms of simplicity<\/h2>\n

Fortunately, there are also cars that do not have all those systems. And exactly those kinds of cars seem to be in more demand than ever. People want to escape from ADAS. No interference, no patronizing, but feel for themselves, decide for themselves. Several owners of the Donkervoorts present are so pleased that they can enjoy a pure driving experience in their cars. They are in control<\/em> themselves. And I recognize that feeling. Every drive in the 485S is a revelation of what driving can also feel like. And whether you have that feeling in a classic Beetle, an affordable youngtimer or a lightweight sports car like a Donkervoort or Caterham: simplicity has its charms and is more attainable than you think. In short: don’t forget that driving can also be pure. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
