The first generation lasted over a decade and the second, introduced in 2015, still knows no end. Late last year it underwent a facelift<a href=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/volvo-xc90-2025-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(road test<\/a>), so it will be around for a while. Meanwhile, there is also the all-electric Volvo EX90, which can be seen as the electric alternative to the XC90 (and also as its indirect successor).   <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Prices Volvo EX90 (and XC90)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Prices are already similar, with even an advantage for the Volvo EX90. The XC90 currently comes from 93,495 euros (from now on always plug-in hybrid) and from 83,495 euros you can drive away in the EX90. The XC90 is at least a Plus version, though. The EX90 offers a choice of three trim levels: Core, Plus and Ultra. The latter two drop the starting price to 87,995 and 99,195 euros. All in all, the XC90 and EX90 simply have similar prices. On that basis, you don&#8217;t have to make the choice.      <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AutoRAI-Volvo-EX90-Twin-Motor-Performance-Ultra-12-1140x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-205462\"><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Drive Volvo EX90<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So the Volvo EXC90 is always all-electric, with a choice of three powertrains: Single Motor, Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance. The main specifications of these variants in a row: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RWD, 205 kW (279 hp), 490 Nm, 0-100 km\/h in 8.4 seconds, range 606 km (WLTP)<\/li>\n<li>AWD, 300 kW (408 hp), 770 Nm, 0-100 km\/h in 5.9 seconds, range 681 km (WLTP)<\/li>\n<li>AWD, 380 kW (517 hp), 910 Nm, 0-100 km\/h in 4.9 seconds, range 616 km (WLTP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The RWD has a 101 kWh battery (usable capacity), the other two have a 107 kWh battery. The Performance powertrain is only compatible with trim levels Plus and Ultra. We drive the top model, the Twin Motor Performance in Ultra trim. In that respect, the Volvo EX90 is a breath of fresh air inside. Our test car also has a lot of black, but that is combined with gray upholstery (made of nice soft wool) and light interior parts. In addition, not only does the panoramic roof provide enough light, but the Volvo also has nice large side windows. All in all, the interior comes across as very light and spacious.     If only we saw that more often. An additional advantage is the clarity of the bodywork: you hardly need the parking sensors and camera.<\/p>\n<p>The spaciousness is not just an impression, but actually measurable. Not only in the front, but also in the back seat, you are spacious. Only the third row of seats is clearly intended for children. A short ride as an adult might be manageable, but you quickly run out of leg and headroom. With the third row of seats folded down, that becomes 1,029 liters, and with the rear seats folded down as well, you&#8217;re almost at 2,000 liters! Under the front lid is a frunk, but of modest dimensions. There are only a few, as almost everything is controlled through the central display. Perhaps Volvo has gone a bit overboard with that. Adjusting mirrors? Through the display. Adjust the steering wheel? Display screen. Even to open the glove box, you have to go into a menu (although you can also set it as a hotkey). The menu structure does make sense, except for a few specific things. Simply viewing and resetting the trip meter (and consumption) is done through a menu on the center screen, rather than just through the instrument cluster, for one thing.         <\/p>\n<p>Frequently used menus and functions appear as hot keys at the bottom of the screen, which saves another walk through menus. Despite the rather large wheel size of our test car (a whopping 22 inches), it is still very comfortable suspension. Compliments to the air suspension. Despite the comfortable tuning, the EX90 does not lean over far in corners, but the weight of the car (license plate weight test car: 2,687 kg) remains noticeable.    Is that bad? Not necessarily, because the EX90 mainly gets you to your destination in peace and comfort, not as quickly as possible. It&#8217;s a unhurried car and that&#8217;s nice sometimes, too. <\/p>\n<p>If you do find yourself in a hurry for once, the EX90 always feels smooth thanks to 380 kW (517 hp) and 930 Nm of torque. If you want, you can be at 100 km\/h in 4.9 seconds. On request, &#8220;one pedal driving&#8221; is also possible. At throttle release the regeneration is quite strong, but without making the car feel heavy, as is often the case. Moreover, the regeneration works up to a complete stop. The lidar (that cab sign on the roof) currently collects traffic data only for the general database, for fine-tuning the driving systems. The lidar is expected to become available for the driving systems of the car itself starting in the first quarter of 2026. Because of a hardware modification, the EX90 does have to pass the dealer for that activation.   <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AutoRAI-Volvo-EX90-Twin-Motor-Performance-Ultra-27-1140x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-205445\"><\/figure>\n<p>In general, the driving assistants do their job well, but there are a few caveats. For example, the adaptive cruise control with steering assist keeps too much distance from the car in front. It is the ideal two-second distance, but in the busy Netherlands that simply means that others are constantly diving in front of you. As a result, the Volvo reduces speed, increases the distance, someone dives in front again, et cetera. Unfortunately, the distance to the car in front is not adjustable.    <\/p>\n<p>There are also positive notes. Lane assist interventions are nicely subtle and also happen only when you are actually about to cross the line, not well before as you still often see. Lane assist is a system we are often quick to turn off, but we didn&#8217;t feel that need the with the EX90 all week.   That&#8217;s saying something. After our week of testing (with varied mileage and &#8220;ideal&#8221; outside temperatures), we arrived at an average of 21 kWh\/100 km in practice. Some trips the car was suddenly offline (inconvenient for the navigation), the lane assistant and traffic sign recognition refused service several times (nice and quiet, but it shouldn&#8217;t be) and several times the automatic tailgate would only open about 20% and you had to do the rest yourself. <\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, in another review we also encountered exactly these three failures. That in itself means that Volvo can solve this with a targeted (software) update. But why this was not done before the market introduction&#8230; It must be said that Volvo is by no means the only brand with such occurrences.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AutoRAI-Volvo-EX90-Twin-Motor-Performance-Ultra-9-1140x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-205467\"><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Like some other brands, Volvo seems to have gone a bit overboard in automating, digitizing and electrifying functions that could just as well be manual, analog or mechanical. Not only does that take getting used to for ease of use, but it doesn&#8217;t always work flawlessly as a result. To put a positive spin on it: a targeted software update can solve this, and with this we have immediately had the most important consideration.  <\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, the Volvo EX90 is a very fine car, with a nice and spacious interior that provides all the comforts. In addition, you can rely on comfortable driving characteristics, a beautiful design and a nicely finished interior. The Volvo EX90 is justifiably the new Volvo flagship.
