In the Netherlands, we are used to charging cheaply. At the supermarket or in a parking garage, you easily connect your electric car to a charging pole and pay a price for the power you take. Standing at the pole is basically free. But on vacation, charging rates are often more opaque and especially more expensive. This is because here the so-called time rates may apply. An additional rate per minute that your car remains at the charging station, during charging or after your car is fully charged. <\/p>\n

Why are charging rates abroad so insidious?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The kWh price itself is not too bad. In many European countries you pay between 40 and 80 cents per kilowatt hour. An amount comparable to the situation in the Netherlands. But at many charging points, there is something more. A time tariff, also known as ‘sticky tariff’. <\/p>\n

It works like this. Once your battery is full, the meter for the block rate starts. For example, you pay 10 cents per extra minute. That sounds harmless, but amounts to 6 euros per hour. If you leave your car parked for eight hours, you tap 48 euros, on top of the regular charging rate. <\/p>\n

Case examples of shockingly high charging rates<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The ANWB gave several examples of EV drivers who were unpleasantly surprised by extreme charging rates<\/a>. A vacationer in Austria received a bill of 731 euros. The car was parked at a public charging station for 4.5 days. But in the Netherlands, charging your electric car can also turn out to be more expensive than you thought beforehand. Someone parked his electric car at a charging station for four days. The result? 191 euros was allowed to be paid. Surely that’s money better spent, especially on vacation. <\/p>\n

Why are high charging rates becoming more common?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the Netherlands, we are spoiled with transparent charging information and often low tariffs. But abroad, the charging infrastructure is often managed by commercial operators or local governments. These want to limit occupancy of charging spots and enforce this with hefty charging tariffs. Especially in tourist areas, such as ski resorts, historic city centers and hotels, charging spots are scarce. <\/p>\n

There, there are strict rules as well as extra fees to encourage flow. And the problem for you is that you far from always get a warning when the blocking charge goes into effect. Often you don’t notice it until you receive the bill. <\/p>\n

How do you avoid unexpectedly high charging rates?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to protect yourself from overcharging. These tips will help you charge worry-free and affordably: <\/p>\n

1. Use charging apps that show current charging rates<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apps such as the ANWB Charging Card, Chargemap, Shell Recharge show the current charging rates and any blocked rates for each charging point. Always check this before plugging in. <\/p>\n

2. Set a timer when charging slowly (AC).<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you charge at an AC pole, charging often takes several hours. Set an alarm clock on your phone as soon as you start so you know when your electric car is fully charged again. That way you can move it on time and avoid extra charging fees. <\/p>\n

3. Prefer fast chargers (DC).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fast chargers tend to be more expensive per kWh, but rarely use a lockout charge. The session stops automatically as soon as the battery is full. You are also back on the road within an hour. <\/p>\n

4. Be careful at charging stations without a screen or with local info<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Italy or France, you frequently see charging stations with info only in Italian or French. Don’t speak the language very well and so you’re not sure if there are blocking charges? Look it up online or choose another charging station with clear information. <\/p>\n

Social side of loading: grant others a place too<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Charging is not only a practical issue, but also a social one. If you leave your car at the charging station for too long, someone else can’t charge. It’s like leaving a handbook on the poolside bed while you go do something else. To give others the opportunity to use it too, it’s neat to remove your towel, read your electric car. They happy with a charging spot and you happy with bill with no extra sticker charge. <\/p>\n

Conclusion: charging rates on vacations are often invisible – until it’s too late<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The kWh price is not your biggest concern when vacationing with an EV. It’s mostly the invisible block rates that cause financial scares. Fortunately, with a little preparation and the right apps, you can avoid these high charging rates. So always check what the kWh rate is, whether blocking tariffs apply, when you should pull out, which charging station is suitable and clear. That way, you and your electric car charge during the vacations, without draining your wallet completely. <\/p>\n
