Diesel gets tough <\/h2>\n

Starting in July 2026, the Netherlands will introduce a truck tax: a hefty mileage charge for trucks over 3.5 tons. And that’s just the beginning: in 2027, a European CO\u2082 levy will come on top of that. Electric trucks, however, will enjoy considerable advantages in the coming years: they will receive up to an 80% discount on the Dutch charge and will not be affected by the emissions tax. So driving on diesel will soon become a lot pricier than driving on electricity. <\/p>\n

Mileage costs<\/h2>\n

In the world of transportation, it’s all about numbers, not sentiment. While some Dutch people still swear by the sound of a gasoline engine when they buy a car, for transporters it is the euro per kilometer that counts. According to research by ING Research<\/a>, this therefore means that carriers are rapidly grabbing the calculator and looking for e-trucks. Their forecast: the number of electric trucks in the Netherlands will rise from the current 1,500 to nearly 25,000 by 2030. That means 23,500 new e-trucks will be on the road in just a few years. <\/p>\n

Full batteries <\/h2>\n

However, the transition to electric driving in this sector is not yet without its bumps. For example, the charging infrastructure for trucks is “under development,” to say the least. The same goes for power grid capacity. Many carriers are open to electrification, but cannot yet efficiently charge their trucks on their own property. Because don’t forget: charging an electric truck does little good with a 100 kW fast charger. Only from 350 kW charging capacity does it start to look like something, and actually it only becomes really interesting at 500 to even 1,000 kW (1 megawatt) charging capacity. Just calculate what that means for the already overloaded power grid on an average industrial site, if a transport company hooks up ten trucks to the charger. <\/p>\n

Electric driving works in the Netherlands<\/h2>\n

But if there is one country where electric trucks have a chance to succeed, ING says it is our country. Why? Because 80% of trips are under 150 kilometers. A breeze for trucks with a range of 400 to 600 kilometers. In addition, technology is improving rapidly. New models can drive further and further on a single charge, and with more megawatt (1,000 kW) charging stations on the way, fast charging is also becoming more feasible. But it takes time and (a lot of) money. <\/p>\n

What about hydrogen?<\/h2>\n

While electric trucks are making their advance, hydrogen trucks seem to be losing ground. The promised scale-up of green hydrogen is delayed, and the costs are sky-high. Hydrogen refueling infrastructure also lags far behind. For heavy and long-distance applications, hydrogen may remain an option, but no one expects a breakthrough before 2030. <\/p>\n

What electric trucks are there?<\/h2>\n

DAF<\/a> remains the market leader – though the truck in the photo above is still a diesel – but saw its share decline slightly. Volvo and Scania are doing good business, thanks in part to their early commitment to electrification. Mercedes-Benz and MAN are coming up to speed with new electric models in 2025. And meanwhile, Chinese brands such as BYD are also lurking in the European market. With their experience in electric powertrains and cheap batteries, they represent a serious competitor – provided they can establish a good service network. <\/p>\n
