As you drive, a rotary engine charges the battery, increasing its range. Charging is possible in several ways: fast charging or slower charging via a home charger or a regular power outlet. How many examples Mazda has produced is unclear. The Mazda MX-30 R-EV is still available exclusively from stock.    <\/p>\n<p>In June 2023, with the Mazda MX-30 R-EV, Mazda resumed production of rotary-engine cars. This was the first time in 11 years after it ended production of the Mazda RX-8 in 2012. Yet after about two years of production, Mazda is already pulling the plug on the MX-30, but not on the rotary engine.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mazda_mx-30_r-ev_2025_ger_makoto_src_still_046-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda MX-30 R-EV\" class=\"wp-image-203758\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Research and development of rotary engine continues<\/h2>\n<p>Indeed, Mazda is accelerating research and development of the rotary engine. The new RE Development Group will continue development of the rotary engine, which Mazda says is an ideal size to be used as a generator in electrified models. The team will conduct research and development in areas such as regulatory compliance in key markets and the adoption of carbon-neutral fuels.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking about the new team, Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Ichiro Hirose said:  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Mazda&#8217;s history, the rotary engine is a special symbol of our challenger spirit. We are very grateful to everyone who has supported the rotary engine until now and are pleased to announce the rebirth of the organization that develops RE, the engine loved by customers from all over the world. For the past six years, our rotary engine team has been part of the engine development organization, where the team has been responsible for developing state-of-the-art fuel engine features and ultimate efficiency improvements.    <\/p>\n<p>These engineers have broadened their horizons beyond the boundaries of engine systems and trained themselves in mastering &#8220;Model-Based Development,&#8221; one of Mazda&#8217;s engineering strengths. This time, 36 engineers are coming together in one group to make a breakthrough in rotary engine research and development. In the age of electrification and in a carbon-neutral society, we promise to continue to deliver attractive cars that excite customers with our &#8216;challenger spirit.'&#8221;  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mazda-mx-30_e-skyactiv_r-ev_rotor-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda rotary\/wankel engine\" class=\"wp-image-203754\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Rotary motor<\/h2>\n<p>The rotary engine is an engine with a unique structure that generates power by rotating a triangular rotor. Mazda was the first to install the rotary engine in the Cosmo Sport introduced in 1967. Since then, Mazda has worked for many years to improve performance in terms of power, exhaust purification, fuel economy and durability as the only automaker to mass-produce rotary engines. In June 2023, the company resumed mass production of rotary-engine vehicles for the first time in about 11 years since the end of production of the Mazda RX-8 in 2012. The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV was the twelfth rotary-engine model introduced in Japan and Europe.    <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mazda_mx-30_r-ev_2025_ger_makoto_src_still_034-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda MX-30 R-EV\" class=\"wp-image-203756\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Engineering Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV Plug-in Hybrid<\/h2>\n<p>The e-Skyactiv R-EV Plug-in Hybrid powertrain in its most recent form (updated in January 2025) met the Euro 6e criteria, with power output unchanged. The electric motor drives the vehicle with an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and 260 Nm of torque, and the single-disc, rotary gasoline engine uses its 55 kW (75 hp) and 117 Nm to drive a generator, which charges the battery while driving. <\/p>\n<p>The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV accelerates from 0-100 km\/h in 9.1 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 140 km\/h.
