Mazda has overwhelmingly tried to make it a real Mazda &#8211; with its own design, its own tuning of suspension and steering, and an interior that takes a very different path from the brand&#8217;s previous models. How that turns out? We take a look at the Mazda 6th in this <strong><em>Mazda 6e review <\/em><\/strong>under the microscope. Small note: we drove in pre-production models, as actual delivery of the model gets underway in August\/September.    <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mazda6e_Germany_dynamic_10-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda 6e 2025\" class=\"wp-image-203192\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Mazda 6e dimensions<\/h2>\n<p>On the outside, the Mazda content is great. The Mazda 6th is a hefty hatchback with a length of 4,921 mm and a wheelbase of almost 2.90 meters. This puts it in the D-segment. Its silhouette is low, stretched and sporty, with flowing lines reminiscent of a coupe, when in reality it is a five-door hatchback. Thanks to the recessed door handles, sharp LED lights and the &#8220;glowing&#8221; light signature in the grille, the car looks futuristic without too much fuss.    <\/p>\n<p>The distinctive taillights, with dual light cylinders on the left and right, subtly reference Mazda design heritage. A retractable rear spoiler &#8211; electrically operable and automatically active above 90 km\/h &#8211; underscores the sporty aspirations. The tailgate load opening is wide (964 mm) and relatively high (619 mm), and behind it is a 466-liter luggage compartment, expandable to 1,074 liters. There is also a frunk (front luggage compartment) of 72 liters.   <\/p>\n<p>The Mazda 6th comes standard on 19-inch alloy wheels in an aerodynamic five-spoke design. Those looking for a color with character can choose from shades such as Melting Copper, Polymetal Grey or Soul Red Crystal. Then again, that is truly typical Mazda.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mazda6e_Germany_still_26-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda 6th in Melting Copper\" class=\"wp-image-203227\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Interior Mazda 6e: zen and displays<\/h2>\n<p>The biggest break with other Mazda cars is inside. Mazda is known for its relatively classic HMI layout: lots of physical buttons, a dial on the center console and a screen that doesn&#8217;t feel like a tablet. The Mazda 6th throws that overboard. Here, it&#8217;s all about tranquility, space and digital convenience.   <\/p>\n<p>The dashboard is sleek and horizontally oriented. On top is a large 14.6-inch touchscreen, which works like your smartphone: with widgets, shortcuts and customizable menus. A side note here, though. The system has quite a learning curve. You have to go through many menus to find desired functions, especially the many driving assistance systems. That&#8217;s not des Mazda. Physical buttons can be counted on one hand.      <\/p>\n<p>A unique feature is voice recognition that works from all seats, thanks to four microphones. With the command &#8220;Hey Mazda,&#8221; you can control functions such as air conditioning, windows and mood lighting. Gesture control is also present, although its practical value seems limited.  <\/p>\n<p>The seats &#8211; mono-shaped with integrated headrests &#8211; are covered in faux leather (black or beige) as standard, but in the Takumi Plus trim you get Nappa leather and suede in a warm shade of brown. The finish is of a high standard and the whole thing looks modern. There is an awful lot on and on this Mazda. And that in particular is hugely important in a car lately. A lot of <em>value for money<\/em>. With this Japanese Chinese, that&#8217;s a good thing.     <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mazda6e_Germany_interior_24-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Interior Mazda 6e - black\" class=\"wp-image-203216\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Space and ease of use Mazda 6e<\/h2>\n<p>With a width of 1,890 mm (2,156 mm including mirrors) and a wheelbase of 2,895 mm, the Mazda 6e is a spacious car. Front legroom measures 1,074 mm, rear 921 mm &#8211; fine for adults 1.85 meters tall. Headroom and shoulder width are also generous. If you are used to a Mazda 6, this is a fine evolution.   <\/p>\n<p>In the back, there is a touchscreen that lets you adjust the temperature, blinds and even the position of the front seat. You usually only see such a feature in the premium segment. The rear seat can be folded down in parts and there is extra storage space under the cargo floor.  <\/p>\n<h2>Drivetrain Mazda 6e<\/h2>\n<p>There are two versions of the Mazda 6th, both of which use rear-wheel drive. The differences are in battery capacity and charging speed: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Mazda 6th (68.8 kWh):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Power: 190 kW (258 hp)<\/li>\n<li>Range: 479 km WLTP<\/li>\n<li>0-100 km\/h: 7.6 sec<\/li>\n<li>Max. charge rate DC: 165 kW (10-80% in 24 min)<\/li>\n<li>Towing weight: 1,500 kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mazda 6th Long Range (80 kWh):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Power: 180 kW (245 hp)<\/li>\n<li>Range: 552 km WLTP<\/li>\n<li>0-100 km\/h: 7.8 sec<\/li>\n<li>Max. charge rate DC: 90 kW (10-80% in 47 min)<\/li>\n<li>Towing weight: 1,500 kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the standard version is quicker to charge, while the Long Range offers more mileage. Both versions use an electric motor with 320 Nm of torque and a 1-speed automatic transmission. <\/p>\n<h2>Charging is fast enough, but not exceptional<\/h2>\n<p>With 165 kW of fast charging, the Mazda 6th is among the average chargers. It does not reach the 200+ kW that some competitors offer. A 15-minute DC session provides about 235 km of driving range. Charging at a wallbox can be done with 11 kW (AC, 3-phase), which fully fills the battery in 7 to 8.5 hours. Which battery version best suits your situation? You&#8217;ll have to decide that for yourself. If you charge a lot at home, it is better to choose the Long Range. Are you on the road a lot and thus use fast chargers? Then the smaller battery is the best option. On the other hand, the range difference between the two battery versions is only 70 kilometers (WLTP).         <\/p>\n<p>Through the Mazda Charging App, you can search and pay for charging stations in your own language and currency. Conveniently, the Mazda6e app allows you to schedule charging and pre-heat the interior. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mazda6e_Germany_details_17-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203164\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Driving: tight, not playful<\/h2>\n<p>Mazda emphasizes its driving philosophy of &#8220;Jinba Ittai,&#8221; in which the car and driver should feel as one. In the 6th, that translates to a stable rear-wheel-drive car with multilink rear suspension and a balanced weight distribution of 47:53. The steering is precise, the suspension firm but not uncomfortable. In terms of driving, this Mazda really feels like a Mazda, from start to finish. It is clever how Mazda has given its own twist to the car which makes it feel nicely Japanese. In our opinion, the steering wheel is a little too small, but otherwise it is comfortable to hold. The car is very comfortable, offers sufficient power and a nice balance in the suspension. This car is not averse to cornering. So yes, that is typical Mazda.        <\/p>\n<p><strong>There are three driving modes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Normal: balanced, quiet<\/li>\n<li>Sport: direct acceleration, tighter steering<\/li>\n<li>Individual: fully customizable, including regeneration force and steering feel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Sport mode, the rear spoiler folds out automatically. The Mazda 6e does not feel playful, like an MX-5 or Mazda 3, but offers confidence and comfort &#8211; especially at higher speeds. <\/p>\n<h3>Safety and assistance<\/h3>\n<p>The Mazda 6e is packed with assistance systems. Think adaptive control, lane keeping assist, brake assist (front and rear), blind spot detection, reversing warning and even a child detection system that works with an in-cabin camera. There are also nine airbags on board, including an airbag between the front seats. Mazda is aiming for five stars at Euro NCAP, although the score at publication is not yet known. As far as driver assistance systems go, this Mazda does feel very Chinese. This means that the safety systems often make themselves heard more than necessary. Perhaps Mazda can reduce this with a software update, because now the interference is too much. In China they think that&#8217;s fine, in Europe they don&#8217;t. Especially the driver monitor is too fancy. Also annoying is that the driving assistance systems are hidden over several menus in the infotainment system. A button or function on the touchscreen to quickly disable desired driving assistance systems would be very desirable.          <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mazda6e_Germany_details_39-1140x760.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda 6th - rear spoiler\" class=\"wp-image-203185\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Mazda 6th prices: competitive for its class<\/h2>\n<p>As a Takumi, the Mazda 6th starts at 44,990 euros. The Takumi Plus with more luxury (Nappa leather, wood trim, sunshade) costs 46,940 euros. For the Long Range versions you pay 1,600 euros extra per version. That brings you to 46,590 euros for the Mazda 6th Takumi Long Range and 48,540 euros for the Mazda 6th Takumi Plus Long Range. Metallic paint is usually an additional cost (up to 1,400 euros for Soul Red Crystal). Standard features include things like seat heating, wireless Apple CarPlay\/Android Auto, head-up display and a 14-speaker audio system from Sony.     <\/p>\n<p>Competitors of this electric Mazda include the Kia EV6, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal, BMW i4 and Volkswagen ID.7.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion Mazda 6th review: Mazda with an international signature<\/h2>\n<p>The Mazda 6e is not the spiritual successor to the Mazda 6 that enthusiasts might expect. It is not a sedan with classic lines, but a modern EV that combines Japanese tranquility with a Chinese base. Although the platform comes from Changan, Mazda has done a good job of making the whole thing feel like a Mazda.  <\/p>\n<p>The steering is tight, the suspension carefully tuned and the equipment complete. Still, the controls inside differ considerably from other Mazda models &#8211; which will take loyal drivers some getting used to. Those looking for a spacious mid-size electric car with its own face and Mazda feel will get an interesting alternative with the 6th.  <\/p>\n<p>So Mazda&#8217;s first electric hatchback in the D-segment is not a traditional Japanese recipe, but rather an Asian fusion. Provided you have no objection to that, there is much to appreciate. On the other hand, what&#8217;s wrong with a Chinese base? Most iPhones also come from China. Does that make it any less of a product? That Mazda &#8211; a relatively small automaker &#8211; chooses to cooperate with Changan in the case of the 6th to reduce development costs is not strange. It is the most normal thing in the world. Mazda immerses Chinese components in a very fine Japanese dressing that does make you, the driver, experience the feel of a Japanese car.
