By categorizing vehicles based on their emissions and selectively allowing them into environmental zones, governments are trying to reduce harmful emissions. In doing so, they target not only truck traffic, but also private vehicles. Gasoline cars, diesels and even electric vehicles fall within the system. So it is important to know what applies to your vehicle.

This is how the Crit’Air sticker works in France

France operates the so-called Crit’Air vignette, a round colored sticker that you are required to put on your windshield. There are six categories, ranging from category 0 (for electric vehicles) to category 5 (for older diesels). The classification is based on the Euro standard and the vehicle’s first admission date. Thus, two identical models with only a year’s difference may still fall into different categories.

The Crit’Air sticker is mandatory in a growing number of cities. Well-known examples are Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille and Toulouse. But cities such as Reims and Rouen have also recently introduced so-called zones à faibles émissions mobilité (ZFE-m). Within these zones, restrictions apply that depend on air quality and local laws. Some cities activate the system permanently, others only during periods of smog or heat.

The fine for driving without a valid sticker in a zone where it is mandatory is €68 for passenger cars. There is no margin or leniency in France: no vignette means an offense.

You can easily apply for the France vignette online at reisklaar.nl. You will automatically be assigned the correct color based on your license plate number.
Make sure you do this well in advance, because the physical sticker is sent from France and that can take several days or even weeks. Fortunately, after submitting your application you will also receive a temporary digital version by email, usually within 48 hours. You can print that out yourself and place it behind your windshield. This temporary vignette is fully valid and gives you access to French environmental zones. Ideal if you are leaving at short notice.

The Umweltplakette in Germany

Germany introduced environmental zones, also known as Umweltzonen, back in 2008. To enter such a zone, you need an Umweltplakette. Unlike France, which uses six colors, in Germany there are three: red, yellow and green. In practice, only the green sticker is still allowed. The German Umweltplakette is awarded based on the fuel type, Euro standard and registration date of the vehicle. Gasoline cars with a catalytic converter (at least Euro 1) often qualify for a green sticker. For diesel vehicles, the requirements are higher: they must meet at least Euro 4. Older diesels therefore often fall by the wayside, unless it is a Euro 3 model that has been retrofitted with a certified particulate filter. In that case, even such vehicles can qualify for a green vignette.

Germany has dozens of cities where the sticker is mandatory. Think Berlin, Cologne, Hanover, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. The number of environmental zones is growing steadily, and local governments can add new areas or expand existing ones. The zones are clearly marked with road signs at city limits. Smaller cities, such as Freiburg, Meppen or Osnabrück, also apply vignette requirements. Entering without a valid Umweltplakette results in a fine of €100. This fine also applies to foreign vehicles, by the way, without exception. The vignette Germany is only valid if it is AU-certified. You can easily apply for it online by just entering your license plate number.

Are there any exemptions?

In Germany, there is an exception for vintage vehicles with H license plates (historic vehicles over 30 years old). These are allowed to enter all environmental zones, regardless of their emissions. This makes Germany relatively friendly to classic cars.

France also theoretically offers exemptions for vintage cars (voitures de collection). But these apply in practice only to vehicles registered in France. Foreign classics rarely qualify for exemptions in practice. This makes it more difficult for international drivers to enter a French environmental zone without a sticker.

For motor homes, according to environmental regulations, they are assessed as a passenger car or commercial vehicle. This depends on weight and equipment. Heavier diesels in particular risk exclusion from environmental zones here.

Electric cars: still need a sticker?

Do you drive electric? Then you still need a sticker. In France, an electric car gives you a purple Crit’Air 0, while in Germany you need a green Umweltplakette. Although you drive emission-free, a vignette is still required. This has to do with the method of enforcement: inspection takes place on the basis of visible characteristics, not via license plate registration. So if you forget the sticker, you still run the risk of a fine.

What about plug-in hybrids?

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are classified according to their emissions. In France, they usually fall into category 1 or 2. It depends on CO₂ emissions and the year of registration. In Germany, they usually get a green sticker unless they are technically based on an older standard. The smallest differences can have an impact.

France and Germany: what are the differences?

The systems are similar, but there are some notable differences:

Categories: France works with six vignettes + an additional one for electric vehicles. Germany actually uses only the green sticker.

Fines: In France the fine is slightly lower (€68), in Germany you pay €100 immediately.

Flexibility: French cities sometimes switch to restrictions temporarily in the event of smog alarms, while German zones are usually set permanently.

Exceptions: Germany recognizes officially registered vintage cars with H license plates as exceptions. France is stricter in this regard and barely offers exemptions for foreign classics.

To get an environmental sticker or not?

The question of whether you need an environmental sticker is fairly easy to answer: Yes! Even if you are not planning to visit big cities, suddenly introduced smog measures can still surprise you. Moreover, the rules are becoming stricter and the number of zones is increasing. A sticker costs little, but a fine or mandatory detour will cost you much more.

Want to drive through France and Germany without worry? Then apply for your sticker on time and check the current rules in advance. That way you avoid problems and hit the road with peace of mind.

Why environmental stickers?
