Cheap<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today’s MG has been making inroads in the Netherlands since 2020. The brand now sails under the Chinese flag and is part of SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automobile and Industrial Corporation). MG began promisingly in the Netherlands, with the then very affordable MG ZS EV<\/a>. Thanks to tax breaks, that car was spot on in 2020. In 2025, no Chinese manufacturer can make it as cheap as it was then, due in part to inflation and import taxes. Still, MG is trying to get noticed again with a competitively priced SUV: the MG S5 EV. <\/p>\n

Volkswagen of China<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At MG, they are clear: they want to be the “Volkswagen of China. They don’t say so themselves, but act accordingly. No excess of gadgets like rotating screens on the dashboard or doors that open and close electrically, just a no-nonsense car for a no-nonsense price. So exactly what Volkswagen has been doing for decades. <\/p>\n

Competitors<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The MG S5 EV will compete with models such as the Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq, Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. With a length of 4.476 meters, it is slightly shorter than the Elroq (4.48 meters), but longer than the EV3 (4.30 meters). More importantly, the starting price is below that of the competition at 33,850 euros. The EV3 starts at 36,995 euros, the Elroq at 34,990 euros. <\/p>\n

Driving range MG S5 EV<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The MG is available with a 49 or 64 kWh battery, good for a WLTP range of 340 or 480 kilometers, respectively. By comparison, the Kia EV3 gets as far as 434 or 601 kilometers with 58 or 81 kWh. The Skoda Elroq makes do with 55 to 82 kWh, reaching 376 to 579 kilometers. So the MG is cheaper, but also gets less far on paper. <\/p>\n

In terms of power, the MG delivers 125 kW (170 hp) with the small battery and 170 kW (231 hp) with the large battery. The Kia EV3 always delivers 150 kW (204 hp), while the Elroq offers between 125 and 210 kW (170 to 286 hp). Fast charging is available in the MG at 120 (small battery) or 139 kW (large battery), compared to 150 kW in the Kia and 145 to 175 kW in the Elroq. <\/p>\n

So there are three versions:<\/p>\n
