Audi 50 to Volkswagen Polo<\/h2>\n

The first generation Volkswagen Polo, presented in March 1975, was based on the Audi 50. With a sleek and functional design, the Polo matched the zeitgeist of the 1970s. The car was known for its efficiency, practicality and affordability, features that served as the basis for later generations. <\/p>\n

This is what Volkswagen says: “In March 1975, the first Polo was presented at the Geneva Motor Show: a compact two-door that was simpler in design than the Audi 50 on which it was technically based – and which <\/em>was still sold in parallel at the time. The Polo immediately impressed with its competitive price, high utility value and practicality. At 3.50 meters in length, it offered room for four people as well as luggage. The original version ran off the assembly line until 1978; an updated version remained in production until 1981. In total, more than 1.1 million units were built, including the notchback variant Derby with its generous cargo space.” <\/a><\/p>\n

Second-generation VW Polo<\/h2>\n

In 1981, Volkswagen introduced the second-generation Polo, which brought improvements in space, comfort and modern engines. A notable variant from this period was the Polo Coupe GT G40, a limited special series with a scroll-type compressor. <\/p>\n

This is what Volkswagen says: “In September 1981, Volkswagen introduced the second-generation Polo, with a completely redesigned body and a length of 3.66 meters. This angular two-door was spacious and practical, and a sporty fastback coupe followed a year later. In 1987, the Polo Coupe GT40 came out: a limited top model with 85 kW (115 hp). That same year the first diesel version also appeared, with a modest but economical 33 kW (45 hp). This generation remained in production for no less than thirteen years and found its way to an owner more than 2.7 million times.”<\/p>\n

And that’s three!<\/h2>\n

The third generation, launched in 1994, marked a step forward technologically. This Polo was one of the first cars in its class to offer standard airbags. In 1998, the Polo was first offered as a fast GTI variant. <\/p>\n

This is what Volkswagen says: “In 1994 it was time for a new step: the third generation received a completely new design, an updated powertrain and a first in the form of a five-door version. Thanks to larger dimensions, it offered more space and comfort, and safety systems such as airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and ABS made their appearance. In 1995 appeared the striking, colorful Polo Harlequin, whose body panels were modularly combined in four colors. The station wagon variant followed in 1997, and a year later the first real Polo GTI with 92 kW (125 hp) debuted. A total of 3.5 million units of this generation were built.”<\/p>\n

Fourth-generation Volkswagen Polo<\/h2>\n

With the fourth generation, introduced in 2002, comfort and safety levels were further increased. Standard equipment included front and side airbags, power steering and ABS. <\/p>\n

This is what Volkswagen says: “The fourth generation appeared in 2001 and stood out for its four large clear-glass headlights. It was 15 centimeters longer and 5 centimeters wider than its predecessor, with a luggage space of 1,030 liters with the rear seats folded down. The engine range was expanded to include fuel-efficient three-cylinders and sporty turbo versions, such as those in the GTI with 110 kW (150 hp). Also appearing were the CrossPolo with robust off-road looks and the extra-efficient Polo BlueMotion (only 99 g\/km CO\u2082). This generation ended with 4.1 million cars produced.” <\/p>\n

Fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo<\/h2>\n

In 2009, the fifth-generation Polo debuted – longer, sharper-lined and equipped with five new engines. The December 2009 BlueMotion diesel version consumed just 3.3 liters per 100 kilometers, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its class. The sporty GTI returned to the range, and in 2013 the special model Polo R WRC Street was added: a tribute to rally success, with 162 kW (220 hp). Between 2009 and 2017, 6.3 million units of this generation were sold – the most successful to that time. <\/p>\n

Harlekin<\/a><\/h2>\n

During its existence, the Polo has seen several special editions, such as the colorful Polo Harlekin and the practical Polo Variant. Although a convertible version never went into production, prototypes were developed. <\/p>\n

20 million units<\/h2>\n

In March 1975, the first Polo rolled off the assembly line in Wolfsburg. Six years later, the counter there already stood at 1.1 million units. As its popularity grew, so did its range. Production expanded to factories in Spain, South Africa, Argentina, Slovenia, China, Brazil and India, among others. Today, the Polo has become a global success story. With more than 20 million units produced, it is among the most beloved compact cars in the world. In the Netherlands, the Polo has become one of the most common cars on the road. <\/p>\n

Spectacular Volkswagen Polo Harlekin<\/h2>\n

Volkswagen is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Polo with an eye-catching Harlekin racing livery. This special livery was chosen by fans through a global online poll. The winning livery combines a pop art-like pattern with the original colors of the Polo Harlekin from the 1990s: blue, red, yellow and pistachio green. The livery adorns a show car of the Polo R World Rallycross, a replica of Johan Kristoffersson’s winning car in the FIA WRX championship. <\/p>\n
