What about the Terramar? The SUV shares its base with the new Volkswagen Tiguan and the Audi Q3, which will be launched later in 2025. Again, for those who missed it: Cupra is part of the Volkswagen Group, so it is not an inexperienced newcomer that has yet to learn how to build a car. In fact, the Terrmar rolls off the assembly line at the Audi plant in Hungary. <\/p>\n The Terramar may share its technical base with the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Audi Q3, but above all it shows itself as a true Cupra. At the front, the sharknose front end immediately stands out, with clean lines and sharp-cut headlights that give it an aggressive look. The illuminated Cupra logo on the tailgate is a detail we saw before on the updated Formentor and Leon, and ensures that the Terramar is instantly recognizable even in the dark. A touch bold and quirky, just as you would expect from Cupra. <\/p>\n Cupra has paid great attention to the finish of the Terramar. The interior is a mix of high-quality and durable materials and is dominated by the distinctive “spine,” which connects the dashboard to the center console and creates a sleek, modern look. It all feels solid and looks good. In your hands you get a multi-function steering wheel with shift flippers and under your butt sporty bucket seats, which seem designed by the set designer of Game of Thrones. And as we have come to expect from Cupra, there are subtle copper-colored accents throughout. <\/p>\n In terms of technology, the Terramar is packed with gadgets. In front of you is a 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, which displays all important information in razor-sharp detail. There is also a 12.9-inch touchscreen, which allows you to control not only the infotainment system, but also the climate control. The system works smoothly and responds quickly to input, although it always takes some getting used to missing physical buttons. Furthermore, the SUV is equipped with all the modern connectivity options, such as wireless charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And those who like a good bit of music can optionally opt for a thick Sennheiser audio system. <\/p>\n In terms of space, things are pretty good, too. With a wheelbase of 2.68 meters, the Terramar offers enough room for five adults. The sliding rear seat makes it possible to switch between extra legroom and more luggage space. Luggage space ranges from 400 to 602 liters, depending on the position of the rear seats. Whatever position it is in, there is plenty of room for daily shopping or a vacation trip. <\/p>\n The Cupra Terramar is available in the Netherlands exclusively with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Under the hood is a 1.5-liter TSI turbo engine, coupled to an electric motor. Two power options are available: 150 kW (204 hp) or 200 kW (272 hp). The most powerful version, the Terramar VZ Performance with 272 hp, sprints from 0 to 100 km\/h in 7.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km\/h. <\/p>\n So the Spanish SUV is nice and smooth on paper. In practice, too, but because all the power goes to the front wheels, the rubber occasionally struggles to get all the power to the road effectively. Especially on cold and wet road surfaces, like during our week of testing, you shouldn’t push the accelerator pedal too deeply. But once the car rolls, it pops off like a rocket. A quick merge onto the highway? No problem. A quick overtake? Also squeaky clean. <\/p>\n Cupra stands for sporty driving, and you feel it as soon as you get behind the wheel of the Terramar. Despite its generous size, it steers surprisingly nimble through corners. This is thanks in part to the multilink rear axle and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), which makes the car react sharply and stay on the road with confidence – even when you press the gas pedal a little deeper before a corner. For those who want some extra bite, an Akebono braking system is on the option list. Our advice: skip that one, as the standard brakes bring the SUV to a stop effortlessly. <\/p>\n The dynamic suspension allows you to shape the driving experience to your liking. In comfort mode, uneven road surfaces are neatly filtered away. Feeling a little more dynamic? Switch to a sportier mode, and the Terramar transforms from a comfortable cruiser into a playful SUV. A racing machine it is not, but Cupra has found a strong balance between comfort and dynamics, with the sporty character always remaining subtly present. <\/p>\n Thanks to a 19.7 kWh battery pack, the Terramar has an electric range of 120 kilometers (WLTP). During our test week, when temperatures were often below freezing, 90 kilometers of that remained. Still very decent for a plug-in hybrid, considering competitors often don’t get beyond 50 kilometers on electricity even on a good day. <\/p>\n When the temperature rises, you can certainly count on an electric range of about 100 kilometers. That means you can do practically all of your daily commute fully electric. Charging can be done at home or at a public charging station with 11 kW, but fast charging is also possible: up to 50 kW. Then you need 26 minutes to charge it to 80%. At a public 11 kW charger, the battery is fully charged in less than three hours. <\/p>\n With the Terramar, Cupra introduces an SUV that combines sporty performance with everyday practicality. Its striking design, modern interior and generous electric range make it an interesting choice for those looking for a tough SUV that stands out. <\/p>\n But what makes the Terramar different from the Formentor, Cupra’s other compact PHEV-SUV? At first glance, not much. It is slightly longer, wider and higher, but we are talking about a few centimeters – and sometimes even millimeters. Moreover, both models share the same MQB-evo platform, which means they are technically quite similar. <\/p>\n Yet there is an important difference: the Formentor<\/a> has been around for a while and has even had a facelift, while the Terramar is a completely new appearance. It has a unique exterior and interior design. In the end, then, it is mainly a matter of taste which model suits you better. <\/p>\n Cupra charges a minimum of 48,990 euros for the 204-hp Terramar. Prefer the 272 hp version? Then you’ll pay a minimum of 52,990 euros. Both versions come standard with a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission.
