It allows it to replace traditional fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel.

Many synthetic fuels consist of CO2 and hydrogen. Hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, while CO2 is extracted from the air, from green waste and from industrial processes. Putting the two ingredients together produces hydrocarbons that are very similar to the molecules in traditional fossil fuels. The result is very similar in composition to a liquid fossil fuel and can be used directly in existing gasoline and diesel engines.

However, the production of synthetic fuel consumes a lot of energy. It is therefore important to use renewable energy from solar panels and wind turbines as much as possible. This makes synthetic fuel CO2-neutral to produce.

What types of synthetic fuel are there?

Synthetic fuel comes as gasoline, diesel and even LPG. Synthetic gasoline offers benefits such as clean combustion and lower emissions. So does synthetic diesel, such as HVO100, which is already being used in sectors of the transportation industry where low emissions are important. Synthetic LPG is less well known but has a lot of potential, especially for cars that can already run on LPG. This diversity makes synthetic fuel suitable for both light passenger cars and heavy trucks.

READ ALSO: Stellantis sees future in synthetic fuels

Is synthetic fuel environmentally friendly?

Synthetic fuels have the same chemical properties as traditional gasoline and diesel. This means that basically the same emissions come out of the exhaust, such as CO2, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, depending on the type of e-fuel, the harmful emissions are significantly lower than with a fossil fuel. Looking at CO2 emissions, they are fairly similar. Only that CO2 is first taken from the air to produce the synthetic fuel. Upon combustion, that CO2 is released again, but so that does not increase total CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. This is why synthetic fuels are consideredCO2 neutral.

Synthetic fuels can therefore be an interesting alternative, especially for sectors where electrification is not yet feasible. Of course, the environmental friendliness also depends on the energy source used in the production of synthetic fuel: if the production process runs on fossil energy, the environmental impact is considerably less positive.

Which cars are suitable for synthetic fuel?

Most modern cars with a fuel engine are suitable for synthetic fuel, without any necessary modification to the engine. Even classic cars for which electrification is often not desired can use synthetic fuel – possibly with some modifications. However, it is important to first check whether the car is officially approved for this by the manufacturer. Thus, relatively new diesel cars and vans have “XTL” written on the inside of the fuel filler cap. XTL is the fuel code of synthetic diesel, which can also be seen at the pump.

Performance does not suffer from synthetic fuel

Cars perform as well on synthetic fuel as they do on fossil fuel. The octane number of synthetic gasoline or the cetane number of synthetic diesel is often higher, providing more efficient combustion and even better performance. So driving pleasure is maintained, while emissions are reduced. So for owners of powerful (sports) cars, synthetic fuel offers a future-proof solution without sacrificing performance.

HVO100 at a gas station in the Netherlands

HVO100: a fossil-free diesel

HVO100 is an example of a synthetic diesel fuel that is fossil-free. This fuel is made from vegetable oils and waste fats and can be used in modern diesel engines without modification. HVO100 has proven its ability to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to regular diesel. In addition, it reduces particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions, making HVO100 attractive to both the transportation industry and individuals. The vast majority of modern diesel models are suitable for HVO100, and this fuel is available at an increasing number of locations in the Netherlands.

What are plastic fuels?

Plastic fuels represent an interesting new development. These fuels are produced by converting waste plastic into liquid fuel. While this process is not fully sustainable, it does offer a solution to the growing waste problem. Plastic fuels are primarily an interim solution until fully renewable synthetic fuels are widely available. They help reduce the waste problem and provide an additional source of energy, especially in countries where plastic pollution is a major problem.

The future of synthetic fuel

The future of synthetic fuel depends heavily on technological developments and political choices. Although electric vehicles are gaining ground, there remains a large role for synthetic fuel, especially in sectors such as aviation, shipping and heavy transport.

For passenger cars, synthetic fuels are a sustainable solution for the existing fleet, that is, to make the many millions of existing cars in the world run in a much more environmentally friendly way. They also offer a solution for making classic and sports cars more environmentally friendly to drive, without compromising the authenticity and emotion that these types of cars bring.

Challenges for synthetic fuel

Still, there are challenges. The cost of producing synthetic fuel is currently high, making it less attractive. It also requires a large amount of green energy to make production truly carbon-neutral. But with investment in renewable energy and more efficient production techniques, these obstacles can be overcome.

Synthetic fuel is also not a substitute for electrification, but a more environmentally friendly solution as long as cars with fuel engines are running around. In fact, for the transportation sector, where heavy vehicles remain dependent on high-energy-density fuel, synthetic fuels are essential.

READ ALSO: When is energy truly sustainable?

What is synthetic fuel?
