The Maserati GranTurismo has been a fixture in the Italian brand’s lineup for years. And what a car it is. It is a car that is all about emotion, charisma and a concept that appeals. Because a GranTurismo – literally “great journey” – is neither a hardcore sports car nor a well-behaved cruiser. You get a mix of speed, comfort and space. Just what you need for long distances, but with flair. <\/p>\n

Timeless look<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When you see her in front of you, you spontaneously begin to melt. The latest generation GranTurismo builds on everything that made its predecessors so beloved. Its lines are elegant and fluid. The long hood, the low nose and the coupe shape that slopes toward the rear create a beautiful silhouette that you instantly recognize. <\/p>\n

At the front, her smile immediately catches your attention, containing the Tridente. Her eyes are sharper than before and reminiscent of the MCPURA, while the lines around the nose have been subtly modified. At the rear, the light units have also been updated, making the whole look just a little more modern without losing its individual character. <\/p>\n

Also a little practical<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As with a good first impression, it doesn’t just stop at looks. The GranTurismo also tries to be practical, although – like spaghetti – you have to take that with a grain of salt. Yes, it has four seats. And yes, you can sit in the back. But that’s kind of where it ends. The sloping roofline snuffs out headroom and the legroom in the back is … Italian. For short trips it’s fine, but for taller adults it quickly becomes cramped. Then you notice that this car is mainly meant to be experienced in the front. And fair is fair: that’s where you want to sit. <\/p>\n

Up front, the real conversation begins<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Up front, everything feels right away. The interior is luxurious, with alcantara, leather and contrasting stitching giving the whole thing a well-kept feel. The steering wheel sits comfortably in the hand, the flippers feel solid, and details like the embroidered logo in the headrests show attention to finish. <\/p>\n

At the same time, you notice that Maserati has moved with the times. The interior has become more digital, with a digital instrument cluster, a digital clock and an infotainment system that is easy to operate. <\/p>\n

For everyday use, it works great. You pair your phone, choose your settings and you’re ready to go. But it also makes you think. In a car with so much history, perhaps a combination of analog and digital elements would be more appropriate. A classic speedometer and tachometer would have added charm. The same goes for the transmission controls via high-gloss black buttons. It’s just a little less characterful, but she knows how to make it up to you once you give her the spur. <\/p>\n

Time to hear her for real<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the end, it’s not about these details, it’s about what happens as soon as you press the start button. That moment feels like the beginning of the real conversation. <\/p>\n

Inside the GranTurismo Trofeo is the Nettuno V6, an engine you may already be familiar with from the MC20 and MCPURA. A twin-blown powerplant mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, a combination that impresses with flexibility and power. With 404 kW (550 hp), you’re more than comfortable in this Trofeo. There is also the Modena with 360 kW (490 hp), and for those who want it even more extreme, there is the electric Folgore with 560 kW (762 hp), which sprints to 100 km\/h in 2.7 seconds. <\/p>\n

A different voice, but still recognizable<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It’s not just about her grades, but also her voice. And that’s where you notice the difference from before. The atmospheric V8 has given way to a turbocharged V6. While she is more powerful than before, she sounds different. At low revs in comfort mode, she remains somewhat in the background. Then when you suddenly accelerate, she sounds less refined and even a little cantankerous – that’s not her style. <\/p>\n

Put her in sport mode or Corsa, and the conversation immediately changes and she comes more into her element. The valves in the sports exhaust are opened – standard on the Trofeo – and the sound takes on more character. Shifting down a gear and accelerating full throttle puts a broad smile on your face. Like a good date, she only really loosens up when you get to know her better. <\/p>\n

She revives as soon as you understand her<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At higher revs, she feels distinctly more at home. The response becomes faster, with sharp changes between gears, and the sound fuller. We can certainly appreciate this trait. <\/p>\n

On the road, it shows what it is really designed for. The engine is just behind the front axle and basically the car is driven by the rear wheels, with all-wheel drive assisting when needed. That makes for a nice balance and plenty of grip. <\/p>\n

The GranTurismo knows how to combine comfort and sportiness well. In corners, you notice how well that works. She pulls herself through the corner, remains nimble and provides feedback during the dance. You feel confidence, but also fun. And that’s exactly what you want. If you slow down, she is comfortable enough for long distances. <\/p>\n

Like a good red wine<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Maserati GranTurismo is a car you choose not with your head, but with your feelings. You are seduced by its looks, surprised by its voice and attracted by its character. The GranTurismo is not only an icon from Italy, but also a car that gets better as time passes. <\/p>\n

She is like a red wine. Once you take a sip, you want more. One thing becomes certain, once you make your acquaintance, it doesn’t stop at one evening. <\/p>\n
