{"id":162243,"date":"2026-04-03T15:31:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T15:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/all-car-news.com\/spotted-a-like-new-peugeot-405\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T15:31:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T15:31:00","slug":"spotted-a-like-new-peugeot-405","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-car-news.com\/en\/spotted-a-like-new-peugeot-405\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotted: a like-new Peugeot 405"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The spotted specimen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Once you could see the Peugeot 405 popping up regularly in the Dutch street scene, but those days are long gone. So it was a nice surprise when we came across this Peugeot 405 SR in a parking garage in Leiden. The car still looks like new. The second surprise is the Portuguese license plates on this car. We don&#8217;t often come across cars with Portuguese plates in the Netherlands anyway, let alone that someone drove his beautiful youngtimer all the way here.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Peugeot 405 as a new mid-size car<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When introduced in 1987, the Peugeot 405 was primarily a new addition to the existing model lineup. As its type name suggests, it was positioned between the 305 and 505 (which we also <a href=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/gespot-een-peugeot-505-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spotted<\/a> from time to time). With that, there was finally a successor to the <a href=\"https:\/\/autorai.nl\/peugeot-404-alles-wat-je-moet-weten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">404<\/a>, which disappeared from the range in Europe as early as 1975. As with that distant predecessor, there was a choice of a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon. A two-door coupe was being worked on, but it did not make it to the production stage. In some markets, the 405 was also the immediate successor to the 305 and 505.     <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Peugeot 405 with Citro\u00ebn technology?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Platform sharing is of all times. Technically, the Peugeot 405 was largely similar to the Citro\u00ebn BX. The main difference between the two was that the Peugeot had conventional shock absorbers, rather than Citro\u00ebn&#8217;s well-known hydropneumatic suspension system. The only exception were the all-wheel-drive 405s (such as the sporty MI16): they did have that suspension system on the rear axle. Most versions, however, had &#8220;just&#8221; front-wheel drive. Over the years, the 405 came with a wide choice of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines.     <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Facelift for the Peugeot 405<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 1991, the 405 received an updated dashboard, which also immediately improved overall sound insulation. Another real facelift followed a year later. At the front the changes were very limited, but at the rear even the construction was changed. The tailgate of the sedan was enlarged, recognizable by the body-colored part between the taillights. The facelift also gave the 405 a truly new dashboard.    <\/p>\n<p>In Europe, the Peugeot 405 was succeeded by the 406 in 1995. Its station wagon version did not take over until 1997. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A great success<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Introducing a new model in the 40 line proved to be a hit. It was an important market segment and the car itself was also popular. The Peugeot 405 was named 1988 Car of the Year, with the highest number of jury points ever. In total, as many as 2.5 million were sold worldwide. In Europe, it was one of the best-selling cars of its segment.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Peugeot 405 outside of Europe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Peugeot 405 also had a successful career outside of Europe. For example, it was also very popular in some Asian and South American countries. It also sold well in the Middle East. In Iran, the 405 was even produced under license until 2023, albeit with some local facelifts and modernizations. The 405 was (and is) even considered a &#8220;national car&#8221; there.    <\/p>\n<p>Less well known is that the Peugeot 405 was also the last Peugeot model sold in North America. There, the car was available from 1988 through 1991, in a limited number of versions. The 405 had a somewhat more sporty-luxury positioning there. After (for some time) disappointing sales, Peugeot subsequently disappeared from the market there entirely.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It has been a while since we encountered a Peugeot 405 in Dutch traffic.
