Since the introduction of the Toyota RAV4 in 1994, more than 15,000,000 units of this car have been sold worldwide, including 2.5 million units in Europe. As recently as 2024, the RAV4 celebrated its 30th anniversary. Still the RAV4 is unprecedentedly popular, even in the Netherlands where it has served for years as the first family SUV in a household that also likes to go on vacation with a caravan.

Dimensions

Not to deviate too much from the outgoing generation, the dimensions have remained almost the same. This is also refreshing at a time when everything is only getting more and bigger. We are now talking about a length of about 4,600 mm and a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. Because the roofline runs longer than the current model, it creates more cargo space. Then again, you’ll never have enough of that.

Plug-in hybrid is also hybrid

The new generation Toyota RAV4 is available in the Netherlands exclusively as a plug-in hybrid. So people who prefer not to plug in will have to store elsewhere. In Germany, for example, where a regular Hybrid does appear in the price list. A missed opportunity by Toyota? Not according to Toyota spokesman Wouter Spanjaart. “The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid behaves like a conventional hybrid when the battery is ’empty’. The system always retains part of the battery charge for the hybrid part. So customers don’t have to worry about that.”

Driving the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport

Two flavors

On the menu in the Netherlands is a RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid 270 and a RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid 300 AWD-i. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid 270 delivers a total output of 200 kW (272 hp) versus 227 kW (309 hp) for the top all-wheel drive version. The regular Hybrid has an output of 136 kW (185 hp) with front-wheel drive or 143 kW (194 hp) if you go for the AWD version.

22.7 kWh battery

Both PHEVs feature a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 22.7 kWh, good for an electric range of 137 kilometers for the FWD and 133 kilometers for the AWD variant, according to the WLTP test standard, of course. That is substantially more than Toyota initially communicated. Back then it was about 100 kilometers. The homologation pans out much more positively, hence a higher electric driving range. In practice, count on about 100 kilometers of electric range. Compared to the previous generation Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, the battery is about 4.5 kWh larger.

DC on-board charger of 50 kW

What’s nice is that the plug-ins have a 50 kW DC on-board charger. So you can fast charge with this PHEV. This allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, depending on conditions. Charging at home or charging with standard public chargers is also faster thanks to a new 11 kW 3-phase AC charger that is almost twice as fast as the previous version and fully charges the battery in just three hours.

The new RAV4 is capable of DC fast charging with 50 kW

RAV4 has geofencing

The plug-in hybrid RAV4 makes smart use of its electric range using geofencing technology. By combining real-time road and traffic data from cloud navigation with insights from the driver’s usual routes and driving style, the system can automatically switch between hybrid and electric mode to optimize range. If the destination is in a low-emission zone (LEZ) or requires driving through an LEZ, geofencing ensures there is enough charge to drive fully in EV mode at that time.

High electrical power

Toyota combines the new battery pack with an improved front electric motor that now delivers 151.6 kW (206 hp), an increase of 16 kW. The electric power impresses because you just get the feeling of being on the road with an all-electric car, that’s how much torque the new electric motor has. The version with AWD sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. This top version also has a braked towing capacity of up to 2,000 kilograms. For the front-wheel drive only version, we are talking about a braked towing weight of 800 kilograms. That’s quite a gap with the all-wheel drive variant.

This “problem” also existed with the previous generation RAV4 Hybrid. As an FWD, that also had an braked towing weight of 800 kilograms. Only the AWD version was allowed to tow 1,650 kilograms (GR Sport: 1,500 kilograms). So if you want the maximum braked towing weight, you have to pay a little extra. The cheapest RAV4 PHEV AWD starts at just under 53,000 euros, exactly 3,000 euros more than the FWD.

In addition to advances in performance and charging, the new generation of plug-in hybrid systems also contributes to improved driving dynamics via a lower center of gravity and increased body rigidity, thanks to the location of the battery under the floor. This has been achieved by incorporating the DC converter into the Power Control Unit (PCU), which has been downsized and integrated into the transaxle.

Arene

Well, what else does the new Toyota RAV4 have to offer? At least Toyota is introducing the new software development platform Arene in the RAV4. This is the first step toward fully software-defined vehicles, allowing the creation and application of smart safety and entertainment features in a digital environment. The system uses Google Points of Interest and real-time navigation details such as speed cameras and low-emission zone (LEZ) alerts.

A new home screen gives drivers all relevant information at a glance. The design – with customizable shortcuts, a menu of quick settings and various data privacy functions – looks uncluttered and is easy to operate. Loading times are significantly shorter than before. With over-the-air updates, features are constantly being improved. Of course, there is also a voice assistant.

Toyota Safety Sense

Several driver assistance systems are also available in the RAV4, of course. Think collision prevention system with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, front and rear cross-traffic alert system, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, fatigue recognition, traffic sign recognition and more. For example, the RAV4 also has a Panoramic View Monitor.

Interior Toyota RAV4 GR Sport

Space Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can pass nicely as a family SUV. The car offers plenty of room in both the front and rear. The luggage space is also nice and spacious. A total of 446 liters (up to 672 liters to the roof) is available. The available space with the backrest folded down is not yet known. Behind the steering wheel you are well seated, partly due to the good adjustability of the steering column and seat. Only the GR Sport’s seats offer sufficient lateral support. Behind the steering wheel, you also notice that Toyota has said goodbye to high-gloss black plastics. Very nice. Matt plastics look much calmer and are not sensitive to dust, greasy fingers and reflections of sunlight. Toyota remarkably uses much harder plastics for the dashboard. This is not a bad thing, by the way, because according to the brand this has mainly to do with robustness and durability of the materials. And a touch of cost savings.

How does the new Toyota RAV4 drive?

Is there such a thing as the perfect car? Well, this car does almost everything right. It is rightfully an everyman’s friend. It has to be if the car is to appeal to a worldwide audience. The RAV4 drives comfortably, has pleasant damping, is nice and quiet and is easy to handle on the road. Get in and drive off, anyone can do it in the RAV4. In this car you can easily cover hundreds of kilometers in one go and get out rested. Is the car boring then? No, it didn’t. On request, the car shows a touch of dynamism, the GR Sport just a bit more than the other versions. Still, you should treat the RAV4 primarily for what it is meant for: driving from A to B with the whole family in complete comfort, possibly with a caravan hitched to the tow bar.

Warranty is top

One reason to choose a RAV4: excellent warranty conditions. Toyota provides a 10-year, 200,000-kilometer warranty on the entire vehicle. There is even a 15-year warranty on the drive battery with no mileage limitation. Do read the fine print: because the car does have to be serviced every year at the authorized Toyota dealer. This is the only way to maintain the warranty.

Four versions

The new Toyota RAV4 will be available in four different trims: the Dynamic, First Edition, Executive and as the GR Sport seen here in the photos. There is a choice of the colors Pure White (standard), Massive Grey, Urban Rock, Attitude Black, Avantgarde Bronze, Forest Green, Midnight Blue, Platinum Pearl White and Lava Red. These colors can also be combined with a black roof, with the exception of Pure White. The GR Sport comes only in Massive Grey, Urban Rock, Platinum Pearl White and Emotional Red colors.

Toyota RAV4 prices as of Feb. 1, 2026

Front-wheel drive (FWD)

Plug-in Hybrid 270 Dynamic – 49,795 euros

Plug-in Hybrid 270 First Edition – 54,595 euros

Plug-in Hybrid 270 Executive – 57,795 euros

All-Wheel Drive (AWD).

Plug-in Hybrid 300 Dynamic – 52,795 euros

Plug-in Hybrid 300 First Edition – 57,595 euros

Plug-in Hybrid 300 GR Sport – 59,995 euros

Plug-in Hybrid 300 Executive – 60,795 euros

A good 80 percent of new RAV4 buyers opt for an AWD and 35 percent choose an Executive, the fattest trim. The First Edition is also in demand with 25 percent, followed by 20 percent of buyers falling for the GR Sport. Clearly, buyers are happy to pay extra for more equipment and towing weight. The base Dynamic version is the least popular, even though that variant is also already surprisingly well equipped.

Toyota RAV4 Dynamic

Standard features of the new Dynamic trim include a power tailgate, Bi-Beam LED headlights, privacy glass and 18-inch alloy wheels. The interior has a power-adjustable driver’s seat, seat and steering wheel heating, dual-zone automatic air conditioning and a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch touchscreen for the multimedia system with integrated navigation system. The car’s standard features include Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Trace Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. As standard, the Dynamic comes with a Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging cable.

The RAV4 Dynamic comes as a front-wheel drive Plug-in Hybrid 270. This version is available 49,795 euros or from 699 euros per month with Toyota Private Lease it comes as Plug-in Hybrid 300 AWD-i. This version is available from 52,795 euros or from 724 euros per month with Toyota Private Lease. For business, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid 270 can be driven from 700 euros per month with Toyota Operational Lease. For the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid 300 AWD-i, prices start from 724 euros per month with Toyota Operational Lease.

Toyota RAV4 First Edition

For the introduction of the new RAV4, there is also a richly equipped introductory version: the First Edition. It is distinguished from the Dynamic by a bi-tone color scheme with a contrasting black roof, high-gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels, high-gloss black parts at the wheel arches and black Toyota logos. Inside, the First Edition gets seat covers in semi-synthetic leather and Ultrasuede with blue stitching and accents, power-adjustable ventilated front seats with memory function for the driver’s seat. Also included are a head-up display and the Panoramic View Monitor. Furthermore, safety systems are enhanced with Front Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist.

The RAV4 First Edition comes as a front-wheel-drive Plug-in Hybrid 270 for 54,595 euros. It also comes as a Plug-in Hybrid 300 AWD-i starting at 57,795 euros. Optionally, the First Edition can be equipped with a large panoramic sliding/tilting roof. This option is available for 1,495 euros.

Toyota RAV4 Executive

As an Executive, the RAV4 gets a classy look thanks to 20-inch black polished alloy wheels, black front and rear bumper parts and black wheel arches. Like the First Edition, the RAV4 Executive gets power-adjustable and ventilated front seats. Two options are available for the seat upholstery: light gray leather with light gray stitching or dark gray leather with dark gray stitching. The outboard rear seats are heated. In the front is a dual wireless phone charger and also two USB-C charging ports with 45 watts of power.

The RAV4 Executive comes standard with a JBL Premium Sound System with eight speakers and a subwoofer, and safety equipment is further enhanced with Adaptive High Beam System (AHS) and Toyota Teammate Advanced Park. The RAV4 Executive also comes as a front-wheel-drive Plug-in Hybrid 270, which can be ordered starting at 57,795 euros. As a Plug-in Hybrid 300 AWD-i, it comes from 60,795 euros. Optionally, the RAV4 Executive can be equipped with a large panoramic sliding/tilting roof. This option is available for 1,495 euros. So that puts you at 62,290 euros.

Toyota RAV4 GR Sport

The sporty top trim RAV4 GR Sport stands out with sportier bumpers, specific 20-inch alloy wheels and red brake calipers. The wheel arches are also high-gloss black, as is a trim strip for the rear bumper. Like the First Edition, the RAV4 GR Sport always comes in a bi-tone color scheme. Inside, the GR Sport gets seat upholstery with GR logos in the front seat headrests. The logos also appear on the trims, steering wheel and mats. A JBL Premium Sound System is standard.

Different sliding tilt roof for GR Sport

The GR Sport gets several chassis modifications, including high-performance dampers, a strengthened rear suspension and special suspension and power steering tuning for a stable and dynamic drive. In practice, those adjustments are actually felt. The GR Sport offers more steering feel and feels a bit stiffer. The RAV4 GR Sport is only available with the most powerful powertrain, the Plug-in Hybrid 300 AWD-i. It can be ordered starting at 59,995 euros. Optionally, the RAV4 GR Sport can be equipped with a sliding/tilting roof. This option can be ordered for 995 euros. By the way, this sliding/tilting roof is considerably smaller compared to the panoramic roof of, say, a First Edition. This is because the large panoramic roof adds too much weight at a high point in the car, and that does not benefit the GR Sport’s handling. Therefore, the sporty top version gets a different and especially smaller sunroof. The disadvantage of this smaller roof is that it creates a “hump” in the headliner of the interior.

Conclusion review Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (2026)

Given current market conditions, it seems a good move by the Dutch importer to include only the plug-in hybrid on the price list. Lower CO2 emissions result in a much lower BPM penalty and thus a lower starting price. As a Full Hybrid – with higher CO2 emissions, that is – the RAV4 would become too expensive. Much more expensive, in fact. Nevertheless, normal hybrids will undoubtedly enter our country via import, because not everyone is waiting for plug-in hybrids. But even as a plug-in hybrid, the new RAV4 stands its ground. It has a seriously long electric driving range, is very comfortable and, especially in the field of infotainment, makes huge strides. In addition, the RAV4 boasts an enormous fan base, so there is a pretty good chance that this new generation will also fly out of stores like hot cakes. Just give us a red GR Sport. It looks extra nice and will not only look good in the street, but also at the campsite.

Technical specifications

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid FWD

Type: 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder in-line.

Maximum system power: 272 DIN hp / 200 kW.

Torque (fuel engine): 227 Nm @ 3,200-3,300 rpm.

Hybrid battery: lithium-ion with a capacity of 22.7 kWh.

Top speed: 180 km/h.

Acceleration (0-100 km/h): 7.5 seconds.

Electric range (EV): 126 – 137 km.

Fuel consumption: 1.3 – 1.8 L/100km (weighted).

Length / Width / Height: 4600 mm / 1855 mm / 1700 mm.

Kerb weight: 1895 – 2000 kg.

Luggage space: 446 liters (up to 672 liters to the roof).

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid AWD

Type: 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder in-line.

Maximum system power: 309 DIN hp / 227 kW.

Torque (fuel engine): 227 Nm @ 3,200-3,300 rpm.

Hybrid battery: lithium-ion with a capacity of 22.7 kWh.

Top speed: 180 km/h.

Acceleration (0-100 km/h): 5.8 seconds.

Electric range (EV): 121 – 133 km.

Fuel consumption: 1.3 – 1.6 L/100km (weighted).

Length: 4645 mm.

Width: 1855 mm (GR Sport: 1880 mm).

Height: 1700 mm (GR Sport: 1685 mm).

Kerb weight: 1960 – 2060 kg.

Towing capacity (braked): 2000 kg.

Common features for all models:

Transmission: CVT with shift-by-wire system.

Wheelbase: 2690 mm.

Tank capacity: 55 liters.

Suspension: MacPherson Strut (front) and Trailing Wishbone (rear).

Toyota RAV4 a worldwide sales hit Without a past no future, so first a look back.
