In recent years, more and more signs have surfaced that Toyota is working behind the scenes on new sporty projects – and perhaps more than we think.<\/p>\n

Change of guard?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Indeed, it is notable that Toyota recently bid farewell to the Supra with a Final Edition. With that, an iconic model disappears from the current range – too bad! But look on the bright side, this leaves room in the sporty range. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Serious throttle, but also efficient<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the same time, Toyota is working on new powertrain technology. For example, we previously wrote about a possible mid-engine GR Yaris, mentioning a new-generation 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. That project does not appear to be going forward, but that powerplant has not disappeared with it. <\/p>\n

Indeed, it was already suggested then<\/a> that this engine may find its way into a new generation MR2 and Celica. So if this is true, Toyota may be working on several sporty models at the same time. The rumors point to a turbo engine combined with hybrid technology. This would allow Toyota to combine two worlds: direct performance and lower emissions. <\/p>\n

This fits within a broader strategy of the brand. After all, Toyota is not only committed to fully electric driving, but also continues to invest in efficient internal combustion engines and hybrids. In that light, a sports coupe with hybrid support is a logical step, especially in Europe where CO\u2082 regulations are becoming increasingly stringent. Although exact figures are lacking, an output of well over 250 hp is obvious when looking at similar technology within the Toyota family. <\/p>\n

Four-wheel drive! Consider the GT-Four <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Another interesting rumor: all-wheel drive. That would be an obvious reference to the legendary Celica GT-Four, which was successful in the World Rally Championship in the 1990s. <\/p>\n

Toyota still has that technology, as evidenced by models such as the Yaris GR<\/a> and Corolla GR. So it is obvious that a new Celica could use a similar, advanced all-wheel drive system. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Still many question marks, but that suits Toyota<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Indeed, Toyota is known for not always revealing everything right away. Developments often play out largely outside the spotlight, only to suddenly become concrete. Exactly that feeling is starting to emerge again now. Images surfaced of a prototype for the 2027 rally season – and it does not appear to be a Yaris<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Whether Toyota is actually preparing for the new Celica with this prototype is unclear.
