Where 30 km\/h?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The measure targets streets without a separate bike lane, where cars and cyclists use the roadway together. Research shows that a speed of 30 km\/h greatly reduces the risk of serious accidents. It also makes crossing the road easier and reduces noise and vibration, which should make the city more livable. <\/p>\n

Alderman Lot van Hooijdonk explains, “At 50 km\/h, the braking distance is almost three times longer than at 30 km\/h. That difference can make the difference between a minor collision or a serious accident.”<\/p>\n

Rapid implementation with minor adjustments<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Instead of waiting for large-scale maintenance, Utrecht is taking a practical approach. Think of new traffic signs and road markings. Streets with separate bicycle lanes will remain 50 km\/h for the time being, as these require larger adjustments, such as speed humps or lane modifications. As soon as maintenance on these streets is scheduled, the speed will be reduced there too. <\/p>\n

For whom.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The new limit applies to all vehicles, including mopeds and speed pedelecs (yellow license plates). Mopeds and electric bikes retain their own 25 km\/h speed limit. <\/p>\n
