{"id":147745,"date":"2024-09-19T11:40:02","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T11:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/all-car-news.com\/ev-and-gasoline-car-sales-in-europe-in-free-fall\/"},"modified":"2024-09-19T11:40:02","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T11:40:02","slug":"ev-and-gasoline-car-sales-in-europe-in-free-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-car-news.com\/en\/ev-and-gasoline-car-sales-in-europe-in-free-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"EV and gasoline car sales in Europe in free fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Sales in free fall<\/h2>\n<p>Sales of all-electric cars took a particularly big hit, falling a whopping 44% from last year.<br \/>\nAugust was the fourth month in a row that sales of electric cars fell in Europe.<br \/>\nIn Germany, Europe&#8217;s largest car market, sales actually plummeted nearly 69%.<br \/>\nFrance also saw a sharp drop of more than 33%.     <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acea.auto\/files\/Press_release_car_registrations_August-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACEA <\/a>is concerned and calls for &#8220;urgent action&#8221; to prevent further decline.<br \/>\nACEA says it is necessary for the EU institutions to quickly come up with new support packages, especially as stricter CO2 targets come into effect in 2025.<br \/>\nWithout measures, carmakers risk getting into trouble.  <\/p>\n<h2>Problems for manufacturers<\/h2>\n<p>Europe&#8217;s major automakers also took hits.<br \/>\nVolkswagen, Stellantis and Renault saw their August sales drop by 14.8%, 29.5% and 13.9%, respectively.<br \/>\nEven Tesla, which previously could invariably count on growth figures, saw a 43.2% drop.  <\/p>\n<p>The decline in EV sales is partly attributed to the ending of subsidies in several countries.<br \/>\nIn Germany, for example, financial incentives for electric company cars have been eliminated.<br \/>\nIn addition, high energy prices and a shortage of charging stations in many European countries are making it less attractive for consumers to switch to electric cars.  <\/p>\n<h2>Hybrids on the rise<\/h2>\n<p>The sales decline is not exclusive to EVs.<br \/>\nSales of cars with traditional internal combustion engines, such as gasoline and diesel models, also showed a decline in August.<br \/>\nGasoline cars saw a 17% drop in sales, while sales of diesel models fell as much as 26%.<br \/>\nSo overall car sales in Europe are currently under pressure, not just those of electric cars.   <\/p>\n<p>As for plug-in hybrids, there was also a decline, albeit less drastic.<br \/>\nSales of plug-in hybrids dropped 22.3% compared to August last year.<br \/>\nDespite the fact that plug-in hybrids combine both electric and fuel propulsion, they also failed to escape the negative trend in car sales.<br \/>\nSales of hybrids did increase, by 6.6%.   <\/p>\n<h2>What does this mean for the future?<\/h2>\n<p>Current figures show that the European auto market continues to struggle with the effects of the corona pandemic and inflation.<br \/>\nIn addition, consumers remain cautious due to phasing out subsidies and rising costs.<br \/>\nThe removal of subsidies in Germany in particular is having a significant impact on Europe&#8217;s car sales figures as a whole.<br \/>\nYet there are also positive developments in EV-land: electric car sales increased in the Netherlands in August, and the United Kingdom appears to be heading for a record number of EVs sold this month.     <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sales in free fall Sales of all-electric cars in particular took a big hit, falling a whopping 44% from last&hellip;","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":147731,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[93],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-147745","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-car-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>EV and gasoline car sales in Europe in free fall - All cars news<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/all-car-news.com\/en\/ev-and-gasoline-car-sales-in-europe-in-free-fall\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_US\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"EV and gasoline car sales in Europe in free fall - All cars news\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Sales in free fall Sales of all-electric cars in particular took a big hit, falling a whopping 44% from last year.
