BOVAG did some math based on figures from RDC and concludes that there are now more than 500,000 EVs on the road in the Netherlands. According to the industry association, the popularity of EVs has now created a thriving used car market. Over 21 percent more used EVs were sold last year: 60,628 units. In total, there are more than nine million cars on license plates in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
Han ten Broeke, general chairman of BOVAG, warns that there is still a lot of work to be done before everyone fully embraces plug-in cars: “If we don’t continue to encourage the switch to electric now, the government will have to take additional and far-reaching measures at a later date in order to still meet the agreed climate targets. And those measures will have the necessary unwanted impact on motorists and the market, where you can think of higher tax rates and further speed restrictions. We can still avoid that now.”<\/p>\n
Ten Broeke said it is good news that the new coalition has announced that starting in 2026 the motor vehicle tax (MRB) will include a weight correction for electric vehicles. BOVAG has been advocating this for some time.
