In 2017, the Netherlands had exactly 1,364,309 diesel-engined passenger cars. By 2022, that number is already down to 1,013,354. Compared to 2017, that is a decrease of over 350,000 cars. Comparing the 2022 figures with those of 2021, we arrive at a decrease of 114,504 diesel cars. During 2023, therefore, based on this trend, the number of diesel cars in the Netherlands drops below one million. The “disappeared” diesel cars were scrapped or sold outside the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
The gasoline-powered passenger car benefits, of course, in various forms. Both the conventional gasoline engine and the hybrid powertrain benefit from the diesel engine’s downfall. From 2021 to 2022, the number of hybrid cars in the Netherlands rose from 373,488 to as many as 499,656, an increase of 126,168 cars. The Netherlands will have a total of 262,568 hybrids and 140,013 plug-in hybrids by 2022. The number of conventional gasoline cars increased from 7,246,989 in 2021 to 7,263,785 in 2022, a plus of 16,796.<\/p>\n
The electric car also recorded a plus in registration figures. At the time of writing, there are 252,635 fully electric cars registered in the Netherlands. In 2021, there were 183,143 and only 107,721 a year earlier (2020).
